Gary David Goldberg created the two great Michael J. Fox television series, “Family Ties” and “Spin City.” The writer, director and producer died of brain cancer on June 23 at his residence in Montecito, California.

Born June 25, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, Gary David Goldberg studied at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and at San Diego State University. When he graduated, he was very clear that he wanted to be a writer, but after marrying the woman of his life, Diana Meehan, in 1970, they both opened a nursery in Israel to earn a living, where they established their residence.

In the Middle Eastern country, Goldberg began his career in show business as the lead in The Adventures of Scooterman , a television show designed to teach English to the very young. In 1976, the Goldbergs returned to the United States, where he obtained a job as a television writer for The CBS Bob Newhart Show . Subsequently, he wrote episodes of the series MASH and Lou Grant , for which he won an Emmy Award.

In the early 1980s, he started his production company, Ubu, associated with Paramount. All the productions of the house end with an image in the credits of a Labrador retriever, Goldberg’s pet, in front of the Louvre museum. With this company, he created in 1982 the fun series Enredos de familia, one of the great successes of the decade. It portrayed perfectly and with a healthy sense of humor the years of the Reagan era, through the unusual relationship between Alex (Michael J. Fox) a young conservative, sympathizer of the Republican Party, and his parents, former hippies and liberals from the. He made a celebrity, especially in the United States, Michael J. Fox, who won the Emmy for best actor for three consecutive years, and the Golden Globe. Goldberg himself also won a second Emmy. Actors who would later become celebrities, such as Tom Hanks , Geena Davis , and River Phoenix , appeared in various episodes .

In the 1990s, Goldberg launched another series, Brooklyn Bridge , with numerous autobiographical elements. In 1996 she put on the air Spin City , in which she brought back Michael J. Fox , this time as Deputy Mayor of New York. When the actor had to leave the series due to the aggravation of Parkinson’s disease that he suffered, he was replaced by Charlie Sheen , as the new deputy mayor.

Goldberg lavished little on the big screen. He only directed two films that had their own script. My Father , produced by Steven Spielberg , developed the generational conflict between an old man (the legendary Jack Lemmon ) and his son ( Ted Danson ). …And That He Likes Dogs was a conventional romantic comedy with Diane Lane and John Cusack .
