Gabriel Byrne is an Irish actor, producer, director, screenwriter and author who appeared in various plays in Ireland and England during the 1980s but is best known for his screen debut in a popular Irish drama TV series The Riordans in 1978 and 1979 as Pat Barry, as well as its sequel titled Bracken between 1980 and 1982 in the same role. In 1987 he starred in several well-received projects – the film The Lionheart as the Black Prince, as well as Julia and Julia as Paolo, Hello Again as Kevin Scanlon and Siestaas Augustine. His most notable appearances in the early 2000s were in films such as Shipwreck and Miller’s Crossing in 1990, Cool World (1992), Point of No Return (1993) and Dangerous Woman (1993).

Gabriel also starred in The Usual Suspects (1995), Smilla’s Feeling for Snow (1997) and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) as D’Artagnan opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Gabriel played a character from Dr. Paul Weston in Treatment TV series between 2008 and 2010 and Earl Haraldson in the series Vikings (2013), but also films like Hereditary (2018) alongside Toni Collette and In the Cloud (2018) with Daniel Portman. Gabriel Byrne is also known as the author of Pictures in the Mind, an autobiography published on 1 September 1995, in which he described his early upbringing in a typical Irish family and the long road to becoming a successful actor.

  1. Before he started to get serious about acting, he worked as a teacher of Spanish and history, and was also in a short time a cook, a bullfighter and an archaeologist.
  2. He started acting at 29 and went to America for the first time at 37.
  3. In November 1999, Gabriel claimed he was sexually abused by his Latin teacher while attending seminary to become a priest. He said it didn’t affect him at the time, but he did recognize the trauma’s impact on the issues he faced later in life.
