Due to the recent flooding ravaging different parts of Nigeria, the Federal University Otuoke is currently taking online classes as students are unable to resume on campus due to the flood.
The Bayelsa-based institution was among the tertiary schools affected by the 8-month ASUU strike which was called off recently. After the industrial action ended, however, students are still unable to resume as the extent of the flood in the area has claimed lives and rendered many homeless.
In various social media posts, students of the institution have shared photos and videos of their various hostels and how much the flood has destroyed some of their belongings beyond repair. Other students who are in other States and are unable to travel to the school to find out the state of their rooms have equally expressed their concerns.
The management of the University however thought it wise to not halt academic activities because of the flood. WhatsApp and Zoom platforms are being used to conduct classes, and tests and allow for the submission of assignments.
As seen on social media, FUOtuoke students are currently preparing for their exams as they share past questions online.
A student of the institution who spoke exclusively with RNN on the condition of anonymity revealed that examinations will begin one week after the school’s on-campus resumption. He also disclosed that the online classes and tests are in preparation for the exams which will begin on November 20, 2022.
He said: “We are actually doing tests. We do the tests online. Some courses, not all the courses. The exam will be immediately after resumption, one week after resumption.”.
The Federal University is among the list of schools that still have their 2022/2023 Post-UTME admission forms on sale. The management of the institution disclosed a few days ago that the deadline has been extended as the sale of forms should have been halted long ago. The extension is to allow for more applications to the South-South University.
