Fuel Subsidy Removal: Nigerians Adapt, Switch to Cooking Gas for Generator Power

The recent fuel subsidy removal and increase in the price of fuel in Nigeria has led to many turning to cooking gas for generator power. A trending video online, which captured a generator using cooking gas in place of fuel has surfaced on social media following the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall, Tinubu during his inaugural speech summary on Monday, 29th May, out of his promises to Nigerians, made the “fuel subsidy is gone” announcement, which quickly led to the rise of fuel prices to over five hundred naira across the country.

Cooking gas is a cleaner and more efficient fuel than kerosene, which was previously the most popular cooking fuel in Nigeria. It is also cheaper than petrol, making it a more affordable option for many households.

The switch to cooking gas has been a gradual process, but it has accelerated in recent months due to the rise in petrol prices. In some parts of the country, the price of cooking gas has fallen by as much as 50% in the past year.

The switch to cooking gas is a positive development for Nigeria. It is a cleaner, more efficient, and more affordable fuel than kerosene. It is also a major step towards reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel.

While the switch to cooking gas has many benefits, it also faces some challenges. One challenge is the cost of installing a gas cooker and connecting it to a gas supply. This can be a major expense for many households, especially those in rural areas.
