FRSC to start arresting overspeeding drivers

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has directed Commanding Officers to arrest violators of legal speed limits

The Directive was given on Tuesday by The Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu,

A statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said vehicles of defaulting drivers would be impounded.

Biu issued the order following a fatal crash along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road. The accident involved a Yobe Line bus from Abuja, heading to Maiduguri, and a Yankari Line bus from Maiduguri, en route to Gaidam town.

The Borno Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Utten Iki Boyi, while confirming the death of 37 people in the fatal accident.

Boyi said the accident involved a Yobe Line bus from Abuja, heading to Maiduguri, and a Yankari Line bus from Maiduguri, en route to Gaidam town.

He said the bus from Abuja had a bust tire and collided with the one from Maiduguri.

The FRSC boss explained that both buses were on high speed and caught fire after the collision.

And also, About 45 people inside two Toyota buses and a Volkswagen Golf car were burnt.

They consist 26 male adults, 13 female adults, three male children, and three female children.

The FRSC said 20 male adults, 11 female adults, three male children, and three female children died.

“The remaining eight victims who were rescued alive have sustained various degrees of injuries”, Kazeem noted.

The agency disclosed that its preliminary investigation attributed the crash to excessive speed and tyre burst.
