There was a time when writing wasn’t considered a major vocation in terms of financial success. Yes, the authors of the past era held a special place in society and enjoyed superstar status as they were the only source of entertainment. In fact, with the advent of television and movies, it was believed that writers would be an endangered species. However, television and films have been extremely helpful to the writers. The book adaptations have helped the authors make millions and provide a kind of financial security that didn’t exist before. In fact, some of the names in this list, compiled by Forbes magazine, are due to earnings from the adaptations of their works.

The numbers were compiled by Forbes’ survey of print, e-book and audio book sales by Nielsen BookScan. As previously mentioned, TV and film revenues have also been included. Only earnings between June 2014 and June 2015 were considered when compiling the list.

Earnings – $89 million

James Patterson continues to rule the literary world in terms of outcome. The former ad executive overcame widespread criticism of the way he works to make the number one spot on this list his own. Though leading writers like Stephen King have often criticized his habit of releasing multiple titles each year, it has definitely helped him become a multi-millionaire. Last year he published 16 books with the help of co-authors. He consistently writes ten books a year and has helped it sell more than 300 million copies worldwide. His habit of focusing on quantity over quality and not caring about every line he writes has helped him publish 114 New York Times bestselling novels.The New York Times record for most New York Times bestsellers by a single author, which is also a Guinness World Record. Another thing that has made him one of the most commercially successful writers is the fact that he has diversified his work. He has written thrillers, romantic novels, nonfiction, and children’s books. With more than 30 million young adult novels sold, he has more New York Times bestsellers for children than any other living author.

Earnings – $26 million

Since publishing his debut novel, Looking For Alaska in 2006, John Green has steadily increased his inventory to become the world’s most popular young adult fiction author. “Looking for Alaska” won the 2006 Printz Award. His fifth book, “The Fault in Our Stars” is considered the most successful of all Green’s novels. It debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list in January 2012 and the 2014 film adaptation also opened at No. 1 at the box office. The film adaptation of his third book, Paper Towns, was recently released to commercial success and mixed reviews. The book was Green’s third work and was ranked number five on The New York Times bestseller list for children’s books in 2008. Due to the theatrical films’ impressive performance at the box office, Green’s earnings have risen majestically over the years. His income for the last year, including book sales, was $26 million, which equaled $17 million he earned the year before.
