FG to earn N28 billion from satellite concession deal

The Research and Development of Satellite Internet Broadband Project, which would bring in N28 billion over a 15-year period, has been granted a concession by the Nigerian government.

After the FEC authorized the contract, Manji Yarling, Acting Head, Media and Publicity, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), revealed this in Abuja on Wednesday. Additionally, the project will aid Nigeria’s efforts to combat insecurity.

The National Space Research and Development Agency, an organization under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation and under the direction of the ICRC, is the project’s owner, according to the ICRC.

They continued by saying that it will contribute to the fight against insecurity, generate over N28 billion over the course of the 15-year concession period, create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, lessen the impact of climate change, help with disaster relief, and enhance healthcare services.

“It will also aid in the transfer of technology to Nigerians in the area of communication equipment design and manufacturing,” he said.

Michael Ohiani, the director-general of the ICRC, gave Dr. Adeleke Mamora, the minister of science, technology, and innovation, the Full Business Case Compliance Certificate for the project.

Ohiani stated that the planned concession will be implemented under the Design, Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DFBOT) PPP model, with Messrs Gilat-Eleo Consortium as the project’s preferred bidder (GO360).

At the FBC presentation, Ohiani stated that in addition to ensuring that internet access is available in rural areas, the project will also provide income, increase fixed-broadband penetration, and aid in the government’s effort to combat instability.

“In terms of broadband, we are expecting 10,000 direct and indirect jobs for the 15 years of the concession. The project will also bring revenue of N28 billion to the country,” he added.

According to him, the concession also aims to deploy more than 7,000 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) across Nigeria over the course of the following two years.
