FEC Approves 14 Road Projects in Flood-Affected Regions

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved 14 road projects. This is to see to the construction and rehabilitation of 14 roads and bridges across nine states severely impacted by floods.

These states include Ekiti, Adamawa, Kebbi, Enugu, Cross River, Ondo, Osun, Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo.

After the FEC meeting, Minister of Works David Umahi detailed the projects, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure.

He explained, “The approved contracts include the repair of Gamboru Bridge along the Gamboru-Ngala/Kala-Balge Road in Borno, as well as the Maraban-Kankara/Funtua Road in Katsina.”

He added that FEC also approved the construction of a 258-kilometer, three-lane carriageway as part of the 1,000-kilometer Sokoto/Badagry Super-highway.

 Major Projects Across States

Among the approved road projects is the dualisation of the Afikpo-Uturu-Okigwe Road, spanning Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo States. Another key project is the Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State, to be executed by Julius Berger, for which an additional ₦80 billion was allocated, bringing the total cost to ₦280 billion.

Umahi noted that “an emergency intervention on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos was also executed to resolve pavement differentials and reduce accidents,” with the project extending to Falomo and Queens Drive.

The repair included the installation of solar lights, CCTV cameras, and relief stations to improve traffic flow.

Umahi revealed that the initial cost of some road projects was reviewed upward by the previous administration, increasing the burden.

Julius Berger requested a review, with the contract sum for a 164-kilometer stretch eventually reaching ₦740 billion.

However, the minister clarified that “approximately N400 billion had been paid by the last administration, leaving about N340 billion to complete the project.”

The FEC also approved the construction of a service lane on the Lekki Deep Seaport road. Umahi mentioned that “over 3,000 fuel trucks were parking on the newly constructed Lekki-Calabar highway, causing damage due to static loads.”

To resolve this, the council approved the concession of federal land for building a truck park with a different pavement design suitable for heavy vehicles.
