Messi and Barcelona: What really went wrong?

Messi and Barcelona financial news are edging on a mountain that the club is currently unable to register any of their summer signings, according to reports in Spain.

However, what follows their inability to agree to a contract with Messi and others has caused series of backlash from fans worldwide.

According to a Goal report,  the Nou Camp side have exceeded LaLiga’s strict salary limit and so until players are moved on, new arrivals such as Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia cannot be officially registered with the league.

The club biggest problem is the wage bill. Barcelona needs to wipe £156million (€187m) off their existing wage bill. Their limit was £296m (€347m) last year and now it’s £136m (€160m).

Fans are even wondering why they don’t want to sell players; you will recall that they have been trying to sell players for the best part of the last three years. It was the summer of 2019 when Coutinho went to Bayern in the hope that they would make the loan permanent. It didn’t happen.

The Messi and Barcelona saga is a pain in the neck of the Catalan giant; he wants to stay and Barcelona want to keep him. However, renewing him on a deal that pales into insignificance compared to his last contract in 2017 is not conducive to making this £156m reduction.

Reacting to the latest situation, fans and all football lovers on social media are using memes to criticize the troubling situation.
