Spoelstra is the first partially Asian-American head coach in the history of the four major North American sports leaguesand the first Asian-American head coach to win an NBA championship.

From 2001 to 2008, Spoelstra served as assistant coach and director of scouting for the team.Subsequently, he was promoted to head coach. Prior to the 2010-11 season, team president Pat Riley assembled a superstar trio of free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh joining Dwyane Wade.
While Spoelstra as head coach, the Heat made it to four consecutive Finals, with trips to the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 NBA Finals, winning the championship in 2012 and 2013.
A graduate of the University of Portland, he was hired and spent two years (1993-1995) in the second division of the basketball Bundesliga as a player-assistant coach for TuS Herten, a basketball club German professional based in Westphalia, Germany.
It was in this context that Spoelstra got his first coaching job, as coach of the club’s local youth team.He started having back problems after the end of his second year with the team and considered surgery.
In 1995, Spoelstra was offered another two-year contract with the club, but the NBA’s Miami Heat also offered him a position. Although both offers held his appeal, he opted to take the Heat job.

Roya Vaziri, then director of player personnel for the Heat, convinced then-general manager Dave Wohl to offer Spoelstra a position on the team.Spoelstra was hired as Heat’s video coordinator in 1995, although at first he was not promised the job after the summer of that year.
Pat Riley was named the Heat’s head coach shortly after Spoelstra was hired. Erik’s father, Jon Spoelstra, said: ‘By contract, Riley was not allowed to bring in his video or Erik would have been out of a job at the time.’
After two years as a video coordinator, he then served two years as an assistant coach/video coordinator. Spoelstra was promoted to assistant coach/advanced scout in 1999, then became assistant coach/director of scouting for the Heat in 2001.
Many of Spoelstra’s colleagues credit his rise through the Coach Heat ranks to his strong work ethic.As an assistant coach, he was credited with improving Heat star Dwyane Wade’s balance and shooting after Wade returned from the 2004 Summer Olympics.

In April 2008, Spoelstra became the head coach of the Miami Heat following Pat Riley’s decision to resign. Spoelstra was Riley’s hand-picked successor.Appointing Spoelstra as head coach, Riley said:

Spoelstra became the first-ever Asian-American NBA head coach and the first Asian-American head coach in the history of the four major North American sports leagues.He led the Heat to the NBA Playoffs in his first year as head coach, despite the team’s worst record of 15-67 the previous season.
The Heat, however, were beaten in seven games by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. Spoelstra’s team reached the playoffs again the following season, but again lost in the first round to the Boston Celtics in five games.
Expectations for the team’s success have been raised significantly for next season and beyond, following the free agent acquisitions of LeBron James and Chris Bosh in the summer of 2010.
After the team started the 2010–11 season with a 9–8 record, some Heat players were reportedly “frustrated” with Spoelstra, and questioned whether he should remain their head coach.

During the 2012–13 season, Spoelstra was selected as the head coach of the 2013 Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, with the Heat holding the Conference’s best record of the East at the time of selection. He then coached the Heat to a 27-game winning streak (second-longest in NBA history).

Amid all the whispers that Jimmy Butler isn’t an ideal locker room presence, Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra says the small forward is a “very likeable” guy. According to ESPN’s Nick Fridell, Spoelstra has dismissed rumors that Butler is locker room cancer.
The whispers came from the now infamous practice session with the Minnesota Timberwolves during Butler’s time there. Reports surfaced that he had spoken trash to almost everyone: young guns Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, and even the front office.
The tension grew so high that Wolves had no choice but to trade Butler to the Philadelphia 76ers. With the 76ers, Butler did well, helping the team reach the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
