  1. When he was 3 or 4 years old, Eric moved to American Samoa with his parents when his father got a job as a school principal there.
  2. He described the experience of living in American Samoa as idyllic as he had the whole island to play around with.
  3. At the age of 8 he moved back to Santa Barbara, California. Eric said he didn’t know how to tie his shoelaces in 2nd grade just because he never wore shoes on the island.
  4. After dropping out of the University of Southern California in 1980, he moved to New York, New York the next year.
  5. After he was directed in Cameron Crowe’s feature Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), he promised Eric he would cast him in any of his future films. After that he only appeared in 4 other films – The Wild Life (1984), Say Something… (1989), Singles (1992) and Jerry Maguire (1996).
  6. In 1985, Eric was cast in the role of Marty McFly in the film Back to the Future . However, after about 5 weeks he was released so that Michael J. Fox could take over the role. The reason was that Eric was too serious and dramatic and they needed a comedy actor.
  7. Also known as a method actor, Eric is very devoted to the craft. In the case of Back to the Future (1985), this meant teasing people on set for always being in character, forcing everyone to address him as Marty.
