Biography
On July 20, 1966, Nieto was born in Altacomulco, Mexico. He was born to Maria del Perpetuo Socorro Ofelia Nieto Sanchez, a teacher, and Gilberto Enrique Pea del Mazo, an electrical engineer. With his three younger siblings, he grew up. On both his mother’s and father’s sides, he had relatives who had held the office of state governor in Mexico. Although Nieto attended a Mexican school, he spent his junior year of high school at the Denis Hall School in Alfred, Maine, where he studied English. He relocated to Mexico City when he was 18 and enrolled at Panamerican University. He graduated with a bachelor’s in legal studies from there. At the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, he later earned an MBA.
Career
Nieto was introduced to politics through his family at an early age, and in 1984, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Under the guidance of Montiel Rojas, he formally began his political career and rose to the position of Secretary of the Citizen Movement of Zone I of the State Directive Committee of the National Confederation of Popular Organizations. He was Rojas’ chief of staff and private secretary from 1993 until 1998 when Rojas was the State of Mexico’s Secretary of Economic Development. Nieto ascended the ranks in the 2000s and held increasingly prestigious positions.
In his hometown of Atlacomulco, Nieto won election to a municipal deputy post in 2003. He ran for governor of the State of Mexico two years later. Despite not having a good chance of winning, he defeated the other contenders and was sworn in on September 15, 2005. During his term as governor, he completed a number of initiatives that had been promised, such as constructing highways and hospitals and enhancing water infrastructure to supply fresh water to the entire state. Notably, he had a significant role in the creation of the Suburban Railway of the Valley of Mexico Metropolitan Area, which offered commuters to and from Mexico City far more broad connections. His emphasis on enhancing the healthcare system also led to a decline in mortality from cervical cancer, dysentery, and respiratory illnesses.
He was forced to run as the PRI party’s nominee in the 2012 Mexican presidential elections as a result of his successful governorship. On December 1, 2012, he was inaugurated as President of Mexico after finally winning the election.
