Port Harcourt and its surrounding areas saw no signs of the anticipated protesters. The demonstration concluded without the planned one-million-man march. Organizers had scheduled the large-scale march to mark the end of a 10-day protest against economic difficulties.

However, for the third consecutive day, protesters did not take to the streets. Concerns over potential hijacking of the protest by hoodlums have been cited as the primary reason for the absence.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command heightened its security measures on Saturday morning, deploying a significant number of officers to key locations across the state. This increased police presence aimed to ensure public safety and maintain order during the planned protest.

Police Warn of Arrests for Unauthorized Protests in Port Harcourt
In a statement released on Friday night, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, announced that individuals participating in protests outside the designated areas would face arrest. The authorized protest zones are The Isaac Boro Park and The Pleasure, both located along Aba Road. The police’s warning underscores the importance of adhering to these specified locations to avoid legal consequences.

The statement read in part, “The Rivers State Police Command has been informed about the planned “One Million Man Protest” scheduled to take place across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

“We are aware that some miscreants, who were previously prevented from engaging in looting and other criminal activities during the earlier days of the protest, have resolved to use this final day to harass innocent citizens, unleash mayhem, loot, and extort unsuspecting residents of the state.

“The Commissioner of Police has further instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders to implement robust patrol strategies and maintain close monitoring across their respective Areas of Responsibility.

“Their mandate is to apprehend and prosecute any individuals or groups found to be engaging in unlawful activities or causing disturbances.

Up until 1 pm, there was no sign of protest in the city as operatives kept moving around strategic places.
