Her smiling blue eyes and her lips of incredible versatility, make up a face that exudes kindness on all four sides. Two Oscar nominations support this extremely talented actress with a promising future.

In the year 1996, Emily Watson was a complete stranger in the world of cinema. Her life, until then, had passed between English literature books and the sets of the London theater. One day she went to a casting directed by a peculiar Danish director. She came barefoot, without any makeup, and Lars Von Trier hired her for the role of Bess McNeill in Breaking the Waves . “There was something of Jesus Christ in her” declared Von Trier justifying her choice; something that she must have attracted him, since the tape has clear religious references. Her character had unusual strength. She was nominated for an Oscar and became known to the world. The statuette, which on that occasion went to Frances McDormand for Fargo, was close again in 1998, for the film Hilary and Jackie , where Emily composes a phenomenal Jacqueline du Pré, a woman of character and somewhat maniacal great cellist.

Emily Watson was born on January 14, 1967, in Islington, London. She is the daughter of a teacher and an architect. She is a good student, she is interested in literature and especially theater. In 1990 she studied acting at the London Drama Studio. Finally, in 1992, she began to work at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in several works like her, “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Children’s Hour”, where she was already beginning to stand out. There, she meets and works with the actor Jack Waters, whom she falls in love with, and whom she marries in 1995. The following year Lars Von Trier opens the doors to the big screen, and Emily is nominated for an Oscar and a Globe for Oro for his role in Breaking the Waves . Later, she is presented with interesting roles in dramatic films, such as The Mill on the Floss ., a critically acclaimed British television production; The Boxer , opposite Daniel Day-Lewis ; Metroland and Hilary and Jackie .

For two years we saw her in important dramas, such as Angela’s Ashes , where she gets into the skin of a mother struggling to support her family; Down the Curtain , an ensemble film directed by Tim Robbins , set in 1930s Hollywood; and The Luzhin Defense . In the year 2000, it is verified that she is also fully valid for comedy, in the tape entitled Trixie , and later in Gosford Park , directed by Robert Altman , in a supporting role. Later, she has taken part in prestigious films, such as Drunk with love , an unconventional romantic comedy with Adam Sandler ;The Red Dragon , “prequel” to The Silence of the Lambs , where he shares the bill with Edward Norton , Ralph Fiennes and Anthony Hopkins . She has provided the voice of herself in Tim Burton ‘s Corpse Bride ; and in recent years we’ve seen her in Labyrinth of Lies , written and directed by Julian Fellowes ; The Proposal , alongside Guy Pearce ; Call Me Peter , a Peter Sellers biopic; and Miss Potter , also a biographical film about the writer Beatrix Potter. Now it just openedMy monster and I , where he once again demonstrates his enormous talent in a fantastic story without many pretensions.

It is important to say that Emily has always remained close to the stage. Like many of the great actresses, she adores the theater, and has participated in a good number of plays, even going so far as to act on Broadway. Among them are “Uncle Vania” and “Twelfth Night”, both directed by Sam Mendes .

Future plans are pretty full. Coming out is her next film, Fireflies in the Garden , a family drama in which she shares credits with Julia Roberts . In addition, she is now shooting a biopic of the Russian poet Evgenia Ginzburg, who resisted the gulag thanks to her faith in poetry.
