Elijah Wood born (Elijah Jordan Wood) is an American actor, voice actor, film producer and DJ. He portrayed Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-2003) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). Wood made his film debut in 1989 with a small role in Back to the Future II.
He later gained recognition as a child actor with roles in Avalon (1990), Paradise (1991), Radio Flyer, Forever Young (both 1992), The Adventures of Huck Finn and The Good Son (both 1993) . As a teenager he starred in films such as North, The War (both 1994), Flipper (1996), The Ice Storm (1997), Deep Impact and The Faculty (both 1998).

Wood was cast as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , the first installment of director Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s multi-volume novel. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, in a process taking over a year for principal photography alone, with shots taken every year for the next four years.
Before the cast left the country, Jackson gave Wood two gifts: one of the One Ring props used on set and Sting, Frodo’s sword. He also received a pair of prosthetic “hobbit feet” of the type worn during filming.
He is the youngest member of the main cast of The Lord of the Rings. He played the role of Frodo, who was chronologically the oldest of the four hobbits in the Brotherhood. However, this could be attributed to the One Ring’s ability to stop age like it did to Bilbo.

1988–1998: early work

2004–present
Wood’s first role after his Lord of the Ring success was in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), in which he played Patrick, an unscrupulous lab technician who pursues Kate Winslet. The film received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2005. He then played serial killer Kevin in Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic book series Sin City (2005).
On May 12, 2005, Wood hosted MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed for the launch of the Xbox 360 game console. In Everything Is Illuminated (2005), Wood starred as a young American Jewish man on a quest for the woman who saved her grandfather during World War II.
It was based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer. In Green Street (also in 2005), he plays an American student who joins a violent British football firm. Both have a limited release but have received critical acclaim. Wood had a small role in Paris, je t’aime (2006), which has 18 five-minute sections, each directed by a different director.
The Wood section, titled “Quartier de la Madeleine”, was led by Vincenzo Natali. The film played at the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. In George Miller’s animated musical Happy Feet (2006), Wood provided the voice of Mumble, a penguin who can tap dance, but not sing.
Happy Feet grossed over $380 million worldwide and received both the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature. Wood reprized her role for the film’s sequel, Happy Feet Two (2011). Also in 2006, he was part of the ensemble cast of Emilio Estevez’s drama Bobby, a fictionalized account of the hours leading up to the June 5, 1968 shooting of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
In the film, Wood marries Lindsay Lohan’s character in order to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War. Bobby was screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival. Wood and his co-stars received a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Later that year, Wood hosted the television special Saving a Species: The Great Penguin Rescue for Discovery Kids; he received a nomination for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in Children’s Programming. The same year, it was announced that Wood was to star in The Passenger, a biographical film about singer Iggy Pop.
However, the project did not come to fruition after years of development. On January 4, 2007, Wood joined Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg on a live television broadcast to announce the nominees for the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Later that year, he starred in Day Zero, a drama about conscription in the United States, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In The Oxford Murders (2008), a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Guillermo Martínez, Wood played a graduate student who investigates a series of bizarre math-based murders at Oxford. The following year, he voiced the lead role in the animated feature 9, produced by Tim Burton.
Wood’s first TV role came on the FX series, Wilfred, where he played Ryan Newman. The pilot was filmed in the summer of 2010, and the series ran for four seasons, with the final episode airing in the United States on August 13, 2014.
