Elena attended Ursuline Academy in her hometown of Wilmington, where she played on the basketball and volleyball teams. After graduating from high school, Delle Donne received a scholarship from the University of Connecticut, which she accepted. Because of her sister’s health problems, Elena left Connecticut to take care of Lizzie, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was blind and was losing her hair.

Eventually she didn’t come back to the University of Connecticut but enrolled at the University of Delaware . There she played first as a volleyball player until Elena decided to join the Blue Hens (the basketball team of the University of Delaware) at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season.
