Today’s viewers will know Elaine Strich best as the mother of Alec Baldwin on the sitcom “Rockefeller Plaza.” She, however, was a legend of Broadway musicals, and in movies she participated in numerous titles. The actress died at her home in the North American town of Birmingham (Michigan), on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at the age of 89. The actress moved to this city after having lived for several years at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan, where she has given various concerts in recent years.

Born in Detroit on February 2, 1925, Elaine Stritch launched her musical theater career on Broadway opposite the legendary Ethel Merman in “Call Me Madam.” She took part in numerous successful productions such as “Pal Joey” or “Follies”, and became one of the great stars of the New York and British stages in the 40s.

Following various television appearances, she played her first major film role in the 1956 version of A Farewell to Arms , where she played Nurse Helen, a co-worker of Jennifer Jones ‘s character . Although she always gave priority to the stage, over the years she participated in titles such asCocoon, the return and Autumn in New York . Woody Allen recruited her for small roles in September and Small Scoundrels .
