EFCC Breaks Silence on VeryDarkMan’s Detention, Cites Financial Crime Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the detention of controversial social commentator, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, over allegations of financial crimes.
In a statement issued, the anti-graft agency disclosed that Otse was invited “on account of several petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes.” However, “he refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and medium of communication,” the statement said.
The Commission maintained that the allegations against Otse are “grave and cannot be ignored,” stressing that his arrest was a lawful response to those petitions — not retaliation for his outspoken criticism of the EFCC.

“While his unguarded attacks against the Commission’s operations are condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such conduct,” the EFCC said. “The relevant law enforcement agency will be allowed to look into them.”
The Commission added that Otse is being held with a valid remand order and has been offered administrative bail. “He would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions,” it said.
Appealing to the public for understanding, the EFCC noted: “The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.”
The agency also acknowledged the intensity of public attention surrounding the case. “The passion, enthusiasm, and torrential reactions to our activities are welcome, but insinuations about our motives should not continue.”
