Ed Sheeran has once again been crowned the UK’s most-played artist of the year by music company Phonographic Performance
Ed Sheeran has once again been crowned the UK’s most-played artist of the year by music company Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), marking his sixth win in eight years. PPL’s figures for 2022 reflect the real-time popularity of music in the UK across various platforms, including streaming, radio, and public performances. Sheeran’s success in 2021 can be attributed to the immense popularity of his album =, which has achieved three-time platinum certification in the UK with over 900,000 units sold. Only Dua Lipa’s chart-topping year in 2020 interrupted Sheeran’s domination of the past six years. It’s worth noting that Sheeran’s consistent presence in the PPL’s top five most-played artists since 2012 places him alongside Coldplay as the only other band on this year’s top 10 list who were also featured in the 2012 ranking.
Expressing his gratitude, Sheeran acknowledged his fans in a statement, saying, “Thanks to everyone who continues to listen to and enjoy my music. I never take it for granted.” The top 10 list compiled by PPL is largely dominated by UK pop stars, with Dua Lipa securing the second spot. The only non-UK artist in the top three is French DJ David Guetta, followed by global superstar Taylor Swift at number ten. Among the top 10 artists, Coldplay is the only band, while Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, and UK dance star Becky Hill add a female touch to the predominantly male lineup.
PPL also unveiled the most-played songs of 2022, with Harry Styles’ As It Was claiming the top spot. Ed Sheeran and George Ezra each had two songs in the top 10, further solidifying their popularity. Notably, the majority of the songs featured in the list were by British artists or collaborations. PPL’s CEO, Peter Leathem, expressed his delight over the success of Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles, recognizing their significant contributions to British music. However, Sheeran’s chances of topping the charts next year may be impacted by the more understated sound of his latest album, – [Subtract], which received critical acclaim but might not achieve the same widespread public appeal as his previous chart-topping hits.
