Ashton was born on April 23, 1969 at George Air Force Base, California, United States. She was born as the daughter of father Oscar Garfein, a New York cardiologist, and mother Dorothy Garfein, a registered nurse. Additionally, she has a brother named Evan Garfein who is the Chief of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery at Montefiore Hospital in New York.

She attended Horace Mann School in Riverdale, New York, and completed her studies in French and English. She then attended Columbia College, Columbia University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Art History in 1991. The medical advisor also earned her MD in Physicians and Surgeons from the same college in 2000.
