‘Shadowhunters’ Dominic Sherwood on Jace’s relationships with Clary, Simon and Alec

Interviewer: How did you come to this show? Did you go through a whole audition process for this role?

Dominic Sherwood: Yeah. Not that I’m at the stage in my career where they’re offering me roles in The Revenant, but I’m trying really hard to go through the audition process because I feel like I’m learning a lot about the character and the people that I’m going to work with. The last thing I want is to show up on day one and realize that Kat [McNamara] and I hate each other. So, I went through the whole audition process. I was actually doing a movie in LA at the time, so I missed the busy audition season. I finished filming and was panicking, saying, “I’ve been unemployed for four days. What do I do? I will die alone without a job, for the rest of my life. ‘ My manager said to me, ‘Just calm down. Stuff happens. ” And then,

Interviewer: A lot of times actors talk about not wanting to get stuck in the supernatural genre. After doing Vampire Academy, did you ever hesitate to do Shadowhunters, or did the genre not matter to you?

Dominic Sherwood : Gender absolutely mattered, and that’s something that worries me. I became an actor because I enjoy playing a variety of different people, rather than just playing one person for the rest of my career. I was doing a movie when I got the call on Shadowhunters, and I did two movies before that and the Taylor Swift video (for “Style”), all of which were very different characters between Vampire Academy and Shadowhunters. So, I dove into a few different people.

Interviewer: Did you ever imagine you could include a Taylor Swift music video on your resume?

Dominic Sherwood: I’ve known Taylor for almost three years now, and she texted me. I actually had just finished a movie, so I was home and she texted me and said, “Would you ever be interested in doing a music video?” And I said, ‘Well, it depends on who for and with whom.’ And she said, ‘That would be for me.’ I was like, “Of course, I can’t really say no now. You put me in a bit of a sticky situation. ‘ Also, it turns out that the guy who filmed it was a friend of mine, Kyle Newman, who is a visionary and really fantastic. For me, it wasn’t just a music video. I was sent the storyboards and it was actually a very artistic short. I really enjoyed that. VS’ was just working with great people and having fun. In my opinion, this is the key to life.

Interviewer: One of the things that’s really remarkable about Shadowhunters is that it really has a very diverse cast of actors and characters. Is it something you’re proud to be a part of, especially in a climate that demands this change?

Dominic Sherwood : I’m extremely happy about it and very proud to be part of a show that deals with diversity, race, sexuality and humanity. It’s about different people from different walks of life coming together and achieving the same goals. For me, that’s great. I’m very proud of it. It wasn’t a conscience decision on my part, but I’m extremely happy about it. I just feel honored to work with such great cast, writers and crew.

Interviewer: This is a supernatural show set in its own world, but these characters have very human issues. Is that what helps you identify with this character?

Dominic Sherwood: Yeah, I don’t have angel blood, as far as I know. I think a good foundation for any form of media is to envelop the audience and allow them to empathize with the characters, and I think the only way to do that is to ask them human issues and to make them make normal human decisions that can you or I would make, if we were in this scenario. It’s a supernatural world, and it’s the shadow world where the Shadowhunters fight in this war that human beings cannot see, but which is taking place in modern New York. I think that helps too. Fans told us, ‘Well, how do you know that’s not happening?’ They are obviously right. I don’t know that doesn’t happen. Maybe there are Shadowhunters out there, in the world. I do not know.

Interviewer: These books have a large audience and are loved by their fans, and this character is very well loved as well. What was the most discouraging aspect of being true to this while making it your own?

Dominic Sherwood: The fans are the most intimidating part, for me. I want to try to forget that and work as hard as I can, and just do the job I was hired to do, develop the character. It’s very helpful to have such a rich stimulus from the Cassie Clare books and all these different areas of who this character is and why he is the way he is. I don’t have to create a story for Jace because he has one. It already exists. We work closely with the writers, directors and producers and try to stay as faithful to the characters as possible, but keep it fresh. The way we do this is to stay as true to the characters as humanly possible, so the characters are all very similar to what they are in the books, but the obstacles they face and the trials and tribulations they go through, throughout history, change. That’s what helps us keep it so fresh. Even though there’s stimulus, I still have to make the decisions as Jace based on the scripts we have on the day, and those aren’t necessarily the decisions on the books.

Interviewer: You really hit the ground running on this show. Aside from the obvious attraction between Jace and Clary, what does he think of her, at this point? Does he consider it more of an asset than an obstacle?

Dominic Sherwood: I don’t know how much of an asset she is. Jace nearly died three times, Simon struggles with certain things, and Jace’s relationship with Alec isn’t going too well. So, I don’t know how much I would say she’s an asset because she’s definitely causing the characters pain right now, but there’s definitely more to her than meets the eye. That’s what started the initial draw between Jace and Clary, and it went nowhere. That hasn’t changed. That initial attraction is still there. When he makes a decision, he sticks to it. It is his law and his gospel. That’s what he did with Clary. He passed her in that alley outside the nightclub, and at that moment he decided there was more to her and he was going to put in the effort to find out what it was. was. He didn’t change that because he’s so stubborn.

Interviewer: You know fans of the books are waiting to see Jace and Clary’s romance, but you don’t want to jump in too quickly. Will we see any progression in their relationship, going forward, or will they be forced to focus on whatever is going on?

Dominic Sherwood : It’s interesting, fans of the book know the arc that this relationship follows. We stuck with some of that, but we put Clary and Jace through their trials and tribulations. Let’s just say the relationship isn’t the same at the end of Season 1 as it was at the start of Season 1.

Interviewer: What can you say about what’s to come for Shadowhunters and Jace in particular?

Dominic Sherwood : I feel incredibly blessed because the end of the season depends a lot on Jace’s decisions. We leave the end of Season 1 on a huge cliffhanger, and it centers on a decision Jace makes. I’m very happy that people see this. At the end of Season 1, Jace is a completely different person than the person we saw at the start of Season 1. I’m excited for people to see the journey we’re on and where we’re coming from. We’ve defined the characters that viewers fell in love with throughout Season 1 on this journey for Cup’s mother, Valentine, and Clary. At some point, a little change is needed and the levels of importance change. I’m glad people can see this.

Interviewer: Jace is always so focused and serious, but we got a glimpse of his humor and some silliness. Is that a side of him that’s always been there, or is it Clary that pulled that out of him?

Dominic Sherwood : Even from the start, Jace had a morbid sarcasm towards him. He has a dark sense of humor, but Shadowhunters are trained to believe that emotions and feelings only get in the way. Actual humor and levity towards any of these characters is considered incorrect as it prevents them from doing their job.

Interviewer: Do you think Jace really finds Simon as boring as he seems, or is he just picking on it because he doesn’t know how to deal with feelings of jealousy?

Dominic Sherwood : It’s interesting because Alberto [Rosende] and I got closer, during filming, and we discussed it at length. We said if Clary wasn’t here, we’d probably be really good friends. Simon is smart, brave, and loyal, and he actually has all the traits that would make a good Shadowhunter. I actually think Jace and Simon would get along just fine, if damn Clary wasn’t in the way.

Interviewer: Alec’s feelings for Jace run a little deeper than he realizes. How does Jace feel about what’s going on with Alec?

Dominic Sherwood : This is something we discussed at length. Does Jace know that Alec is in love with him, in a sexual and intimate way, rather than in a brother-in-arms way? What we’ve decided, after the experience with the memory demon, is that Jace doesn’t know. He knows that Alec loves him, but he feels like that’s the way he loves Alec. Whatever close bond they have is from being raised together and being best friends. So at this point in the story, we’ve decided that Jace doesn’t know.

Interviewer: Is there a trick to impersonating one of the most talented Shadowhunters?

Dominic Sherwood: This is training. That’s all it is. We work extremely hard. Kat can be a little clumsy at times, so every once in a while we’ll hear a clicking sound and see a glowing sword on the floor, but that’s what she’s meant to be. Clary’s not supposed to be as well trained as the rest of us. As for me, Emeraude [Toubia] and Matt [Daddario], every free moment we have, we are in the training room. We have put together a wonderful coach by our stunt team who are also amazing and have helped us make this transition into lifelong warriors. We reduce our lunch as fast as possible to run to the training room to pick up the swords or exercise. Jace was basically born with a sword in his hand. So, i will come a few hours early and ask the props guy for my sword to just have my sword in my hand and work as hard as possible to make this sword a part of me. We trained in different martial arts, so I knew how to move and hold hands. The stunt team walks us through this because they are amazing martial artists. They trained us as quickly as they could in eight months, to get everything as neat as possible. By the end of the season, it was almost second nature. We trained in different martial arts, so I knew how to move and hold hands. The stunt team walks us through this because they are amazing martial artists. They trained us as quickly as they could in eight months, to get everything as neat as possible. By the end of the season, it was almost second nature. We trained in different martial arts, so I knew how to move and hold hands. The stunt team walks us through this because they are amazing martial artists. They trained us as quickly as they could in eight months, to get everything as neat as possible. By the end of the season, it was almost second nature.

Interviewer: What was the coolest thing about playing this character and living in this world?

Dominic Sherwood: This is my dream job as a little boy. I get to kiss with a beautiful girl, play with swords and be a hero. What more could I want from my life? It’s really super. I don’t know if they will ever show blooper reels. I hope they don’t because I mostly drop stuff. I’m a clumsy guy. Through 13 episodes, I’ve broken 12 or 13 devices that we use to runner. The props gave me a rubber one because I dropped it and broke it. There are definitely challenges to becoming those people, but what I love more than anything else is that it’s a challenge. I was not chosen for me. I was chosen as someone one completely different from me, and I really need to work on it. It’s my favorite thing. I appreciate that. Shadowhunters airs Tuesday nights on FreeForm.
