Adopted From:torontosun.comPHILADELPHIA — Dolph Lundgren returns to the ring — literally and figuratively. On a sweltering hot spring afternoon, the 60-year-old Swedish actor sips coffee between scenes as he films a sequence for Creed II that sees him portray his villainous captain Ivan Drago from 1985’s Rocky IV. again the role that made him a star, mentoring his son, Viktor (played by Florian Munteanu), who takes on Adonis Creed, the son of the man Drago killed in the ring. In the series, Drago was the Rocky’s most formidable adversary. . In the Creed spin-off, his legacy is important .From a visit to the film’s set earlier this year, Lundgren, dressed in a warm-up suit with the name DRAGO on the front, reflected on what it was like to resurrect one of the films. most iconic characters. Did you expect to play Drago again? No, I wasn’t. I didn’t want to do it at first because I thought it would take away from the original and there was no way to do it without getting caught up in the comic book genre of how I was playing this villain. But I met (director) Steven Caple and read his script and realized the guy was really, really talented. And the character (as it’s written now) is hugely interesting and challenging. Were you surprised after Creed that they came back with a storyline that revisited the character of Drago? Yes. I went to the premiere of the first Creed and I was there and Sly was there and we took some pictures. I was sitting in the audience and suddenly realized, “Oh s…. I’m the one who killed his father – people here are going to hate me. But luckily they never showed any of that in the film. However, I did not expect this kind of story. I first heard Stallone say there was an idea. It was kind of a theme of the sins of the fathers. I knew it resonated with him and it resonated with me. I thought that was smart. What’s the biggest difference between Rocky IV and Creed II?The big difference is the style. Rocky IV was more of a cartoon. In this you take 500 punches to the head and still be fine. It was about building an insurmountable villain and then defeating him. As soon as (Drago) is beaten, this movie is over. This movie is not about that. It’s about these characters trying to find themselves in the world. When the fight is over, that doesn’t mean the movie is over; this is not the end of the story. It continues. It looks a lot like the first Rocky. In the first Rocky, Apollo Creed wasn’t really a villain, he was just a hindrance for Rocky to find himself and prove himself something. I think that happens in this story as well and it’s unexpected. The Russians are here for a reason. It’s not just about getting beat up.Updated: 24 JUL 2018
