Dolores abril
She triumphed in the field of copla, especially with her “Peleas en joma” sung with her husband, Juanito Valderrama, whom she also accompanied as an actress in the movies. Dolores Abril has died at the age of 85 in Seville, as announced by Juan Antonio Valderrama, her son, who is also dedicated to song.
Born in Hellín (Albacete) on May 9, 1935, Dolores Caballero Abril began singing at a very young age in the towns of La Mancha. She already had five solo albums when she got together with Juanito Valderrama, also dedicated to copla, who was already married, but left her wife for her. “When he told me that he wanted to be with me, I told him to go home, put all his assets in the name of his wife and children and that when he came to me with just one suitcase, I would accept him,” recalled the singer. . Together, they toured the stages of all Spain and triumphed with various albums, although Valderrama did not obtain a marriage annulment until 1979, and they could not celebrate their wedding.
In the 1960s, the couple took advantage of their popularity to succeed in the cinema. Together they took part in the films El emigrante (1960), Gitana (1965), De barro y oro (1966), La niña del patio (1967) and El padre Coplillas (1968). These titles might not have great quality, but they were successful in theaters, especially because they incorporated the duo’s songs.
With Valderrama he had two children, the aforementioned Juan Antonio, and Juana Dolores Valderrama, who, like the rest of the family, also sings. After her death due to a heart attack by her partner, in 2004, Dolores Abril withdrew from the stage forever.
