DJ Cuppy was born on November 11, 1992, to Femi and Nana Otedola. She lived in Ilupeju, Lagos, Nigeria for six years and attended Grange School, Ikeja. Later on, she relocated to London where she had her GCSEs and A-Levels. In 2014, she graduated from King’s College London with a degree in business and economics.
In 2015, she earned a master’s degree in music business from New York University. A few months ago in October 2021, DJ Cuppy enrolled at the University of Oxford where she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in African Studies.
Career
Within the first two years of her career as a DJ, Cuppy achieved worldwide recognition and was even featured in the 2015 April/May issue of Forbes Woman Africa.
Cuppy’s global career began in 2014 when she played as the resident DJ at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban, South Africa. She also performed at the Financial Times Luxury Summit in Mexico City and Tatler and Christie’s Art Ball in London in the same year.
In July 2014, she released her first compilation mix in London and Lagos, “House of Cuppy” before launching it in New York in September that year. 2014 was more than a startup year for Cuppy as she also launched her London-based music management and content production business, Red Velvet Music Group that year.
The following year (2015), Cuppy began her first DJ tour in Africa. The tour covered 8 countries including Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, and Uganda. It featured major artist collaborations, performances, and charitable engagements sponsored by The Dangote Foundation and GT Bank. She further interned with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation music company in 2015.
The tour which was tagged “Cuppy Takes Africa” also aired on Fox Life Africa as an 8-episode documentary series.
