Diego Costa facts

  1. Diego Costa inherited his love of football from his father, Jose de Jesus.
  2. Diego was named after the Argentinean great Diego Maradona by his father. Diego’s older brother, Jair, was named after the elegant and flamboyant Brazilian winger Jairzinho, who was one of the best players of the 1970s.
  3. He had a very humble beginning.
  4. Diego attributes his “take no prisoner” style of play to his children’s games. In his hometown of Lagarto, there were neither grass pitches nor organized club football. More than often he played in the streets and with children who were more than two to three years older than him. Played on the streets, these games had no rules and no customary time frame. The game ended when everyone was tired and it all came down to who scored more goals.
  5. Despite being very close to his older brother Jair, the two siblings had a lot of issues growing up. In an interview with Dailymail, Diego revealed that playing against his brother as a kid was the worst thing. They had to be on the same team or things got ugly more often than not.
  6. In modern football, where talented players are often picked up by local academies by the age of 12, Diego was not attached to any academy until he was 15.
  7. He had moved to Sao Paulo to work with his uncle Jarminho around 15, who had his own business. He used to accompany his uncle to Paraguay, from where they brought a truckload of goods to the store for sale. Luckily, his uncle used his connections to sign up with Barcelona Esportiva Capela. He was paid a hundred pounds a month at the club.
  8. When he was spotted by the influentialPortuguese agent Jorge Mendes, he was not scheduled to take part in the tournament. He was suspended for four months for behavior very typical of Diego Costa. He had slapped his rival in the match and then abused the referee when he was handed a red card for the offence.
  9. His move to Europe with a transfer to Portuguese Club Braga brought challenges of its own for the teenager. He was homesick and wanted to return home within a month of joining the new club. His father had to convince him to stay strong.
  10. To say he has some sort of negative image with most opposing fans would be a massive understatement, and his over-the-top aggression and antics certainly don’t help him much. However, he is far from the villain he is portrayed as. For example, he has opened a football school in his hometown and is paying for it. Nearly 200 students are enrolled and his childhood friend Junior Menezes helps run the school.
  11. In modern football, special emphasis is placed onrecovery of the body. However, Costa wasn’t too aware of the concept early in his career. During his time at Spanish club Celta Vigo, he played soccer with his friend at 11pm on the university campus.
  12. Diego is not a man to mess with, and two thieves took it hard. Once, returning from a match, his team bus stopped at a gas station and he and his teammates got out. When he returned to the bus, he found two people stealing things. Diego’s teammates had to sprint after him as he started after the thieves, shouting profanities in Portuguese and growling so that he looked like a lunatic.
  13. His former loan club Albacete administrator Vicente Ferre de la Rosa revealed he once had a very high volume movie. When the neighbor, who was an old woman, asked him to turn down the volume, Diego reportedly asked her if she didn’t like making love.
  14. He once accidentally killed his Yorkshire terrier. He was reversing when the incident happened. Depressed for almost a month, Costa collapsed in front of Atletico teammate Paulo Assuncao.
  15. Diego has often declared his love for his former club and has claimed that he owes his career to them. And the way the club have looked after him justifies such affection. The club hierarchy made every decision considering his character and demeanor. He was loaned to Celta Vigo in place of Malaga because the club director felt he was losing focus in the city known for nightlife. Also, they had people at Celta Vigo constantly updating his parents’ club on everything.
