Biography

Didier Drogba was born on 11 March 1978 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. At the age of five, he was sent to France by his parents to live with his uncle, Michel Goba, who is a professional footballer. Drogba began to play football at the age of 15, playing for several youth teams including  Levallois.

He however made his professional debut for Ligue 2 club, Le Mans at the age of 18. In his first season at the club, he scored seven goals in thirty games but did not live up to expectations in the following seasons due to injury. He, however, redeemed himself in his last season at the club scoring 7 goals in 24 appearances.

Halfway through the 2001–02 season, Drogba made a transfer to Guingamp for a transfer fee of £80,000. In the second half of the season, he scored three goals in  11 appearances helping the club avoid relegation.

However, the next season he scored 17 goals in 34 appearances helping Guingamp finish seventh.  His strong goal-scoring record attracted interest from larger clubs and at the end of the season, he moved to side Olympique de Marseille for a fee of £3.3 million.

Despite just spending a  season at Marseille, Drogba scored 32 goals in 55 appearances, 19 goals in the Domestic league; five goals in the UEFA Champions League and six in the UEFA Cup.  He also won the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Player of the Year award.

Drogba joined Chelsea at the end of the 2004 season, where he spent 8 years, scoring 157 in 341 appearances. He left the club in 2012 joining Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League. He also played in Galatasaray, Montreal Impact and  Phoenix Rising for two seasons each before retiring in 2018.
