When he’s not training for his fights, Johnson doesn’t follow a strict diet plan. He likes to eat and drink whatever he wants, be it pizza or beer. But once he starts preparing his camp, he only eats clean and healthy food.

- While attending Washington High School, he practiced wrestling. He made it to 3rd place in his junior year and 2nd place in his senior year.
- He also took up track and cross country to improve his athleticism for wrestling. He did well in both disciplines and managed to enter the state championships in both disciplines in high school.
- Before deciding to turn pro, he had fought three amateur fights and won two of them. One victory came by KO and another by assist.
- He has won all 10 of his pro fights and made his World Extreme cagefighting debut in the bantamweight category at WEC 48. However, he was not doing well as he lost to Brad Pickett via unanimous decision.
- In February 2011, he made his UFC debut at UFC 126 in a fight against Japanese superstar Norifumi Yamamoto. He won the match unanimously.
- In October 2011, he took on Dominick Cruz for the UFC Bantamweight Title. However, he was defeated by unanimous decision.
- In September 2012, he became the inaugural UFC Flyweight Champion after defeating Joseph Benavidez in a very close bout.
- In July 2013, he won his first submission of the night bonus award after managing to defeat John Moraga via an armbar submission late in the 5th round.

- In July 2017 he was declared Fighter of the Year at the ESPY Awards. The award was presented in recognition of his immense achievements, which saw him draw level with Anderson Silva in the most consecutive title defenses (10) in UFC history.
