Lindo is the son of Jamaican parents who had emigrated to Britain. He spent most of his early childhood growing up in the London Borough of Lewisham. His mother was a nurse while his father worked various jobs.
During her childhood, Lindo moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, along with her mother. Later, she moved to San Francisco when she was only six years old.
Lindo developed a passion for acting after watching productions of The Taming of the Shrew and Cyrano de Bergerac on public television. At 24, she went to the American Conservatory Theater, graduating in 1979.
Lindo has an honorary Doctorate of Arts and Humanities from Virginia Union University. In 2004, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University.

Delroy Lindo began his career working a variety of jobs ranging from helping tables, driving taxis, and selling pesticides over the phone.
He made his first screen debut in the 1979 British comedy Meet the Lady . The same year, he appeared in an American coming-of-age comedy film, More American Graffiti as an Army Sgt. He left movies for 10 years to focus on theater for most of the 1980s.
Lindo made his Broadway debut in “Master Harold”…and the Boys , in 1982. His first big breakthrough came after appearing in a touring production of the Lorraine Hansberry classic One Goes Into the Sun , in 1987. After A few years old, he appeared in August Wilson ‘s Broadway play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone . Her astonishing performance earned her a Tony nomination.
After guest-starring in a few movies, Lindo landed his first lead film under director-producer, Spike Lee in the 1990s; Malcolm x , Crooklyn and Clockers . His other notable films include Shrink in 1995 and Ransom in 1996.
Lindo starred alongside legendary African-American baseball pitcher Paige Wallet in the made-for-television movie The Soul of the Game . For her performance, she received an NAACP Image Award nomination. She also appeared in the romantic comedy A Life Less Ordinary in 1997.
