Early Career
Dele Momodu earned his bachelor’s degree in 1982 from the University of Ile Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). He graduated with a Yoruba degree and a master’s degree in English Literature (1988). Between 1982 to 1983, while on National Service, he lectured at the Oyo State College of Arts and Science in Ile-Ife. And between 1983 and 1985, he worked as a private secretary to Chief Akin Omoboriowo, the former Deputy Governor of Ondo State.
Momodu worked for the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, in 1986, managing the monarch’s Motel Royal Limited. And he went on to study for his post-graduate degree in English literature after resigning from the Motel Royal. During this time, he supplied articles to The Guardian, The Sunday Tribune, and other Nigerian-based newspapers. Dele was named “Doctor of Humane Letters” by the University of Professional Studies in Accra, Ghana, on July 30, 2016.
Dele Momodu received his first work as a staff writer with African Concord magazine, which was owned by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, in May 1988. Narrow-Escape from Political Consequences
Momodu resigned in 1993 to join the Moshood Abiola presidential campaign. Then, he was arrested and jailed at Alagbon Close in Lagos following General Ibrahim Babangida’s annulment of the presidential election on June 12. He was punished by the regime in power for his pro-democratic ideals, yet he was determined and bold. Afterwards, the regime of Sani Abacha, then a dictator, planned to arrest him and accuse him of treason in 1995. This was because, after the assassination of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Momodu was suspected of being one of the brains behind the pirate radio station, Radio Freedom. Momodu escaped by posing as a farmer and crossing the Seme border into Cotonou, Benin Republic, from where he travelled to Togo, Ghana, and then the United Kingdom.
After this incident, he was unable to return to Nigeria for three long years. He has since been cleared of all accusations made by the Abacha administration, which are thought to have been fabricated by Abacha’s anti-democratic administration, which Momodu fought with his support for MKO Abiola’s campaign.
In September 2010, Dele Momodu publicly declared his intention to run for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the Labour Party during the 2011 presidential election cycle. However, the Labour Party had to withdraw from the presidential election. He ended up running under the platform of the National Conscience Party, losing in the general elections to Goodluck Jonathan. Dele Momodu thereafter declared his desire to run for the office of the president of Nigeria on the platform of the biggest opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, in February 2022. Unfortunately, he lost in the PDP presidential primary election.
