Her father Benjamin Roberts was a business owner and her mother Ruth Roberts was a homemaker. Deborah has a sister named Tina Clarington.

Deborah Roberts earned her BA in Journalism in 1982 from the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, located in Athens, Georgia.
In the year 1982, Deborah Roberts began her career at WTVM, a local television station in Columbus, Georgia. After that, she went on to work at WBIR, a local television station in Knoxville, Tennessee. From 1987 to 1990, Ella Deborah served on WFTV as a co-anchor of the weekend news, bureau chief, and NASA field reporter.
Deborah Roberts then joined NBC News as a general assignment reporter in the year 1990. She later served as a correspondent for Dateline NBC as an NBC News program called newsmagazine. After NBC, in the year 1995, Deborah moved to ABC News as a correspondent for a newsmagazine show called 20/20 and also as a substitute anchor for World News Tonight Weekend. She has also worked on a morning news show called Good Morning America.
