DAWN WARD INTERVIEW

Source: www.theboltonnews.co.uk

Congratulations on the success of Real Housewives of Cheshire, people seem to like it – what response did you get?

Dawn Ward: In general, the response has been very positive and quite scary by the number of people watching it. It’s very strange for someone like me who has never been in the public eye to suddenly be recognized and ask for autographs and photos.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it but it’s good!

Were you nervous at all signing up to appear on the show?

Dawn Ward: I think anyone signing up for a reality TV show will understandably be a little nervous and have their reservations, but when a big brand like the Real Housewives approached me, I was like, ‘If you ever sign up for a show, now is the time.

And I have to be honest, I’m really glad I did.

Have you had negative feedback and how do you deal with it?

Dawn Ward: I actually haven’t had that many negative comments, I’ve been pretty overwhelmed with the support.

Because I’m a character in my own right and I’m kind of like Marmite, most of the time when people meet me, to start with they’re not very sure but when they get to know me, they get to know it I’m not that bad.

I am an honest person and will always stay true to my friends and family. But I have to say that I had the most amazing positive feedback.

Where are you from in Bolton, where did you grow up and what school did you go to?

Dawn Ward: I’m from Salford, that’s where I was born. I then moved to Bolton around the age of eight.

I lived in Hunger Hill and went to Deane Elementary School and then Deane High School.

How do you think your roots influence who you are today?

Dawn Ward: I grew up in a working class family and my dad is 20 years youngest, my mom seven years eldest.

I was taught to appreciate the value of money and that to be successful in life and have beautiful things, you have to work hard.

I saw my own parents do this and saw the good times and the bad, and I learned never to take anything for granted.

Everything I am as a person I owe to my parents. I have the best parents ever.

I am an only child and my mom and dad made me very independent and always told me never to give up.

Everything good about my personality and work ethic is definitely down to my parents.

My husband and I work extremely hard to enjoy an enjoyable lifestyle for ourselves and our lovely children.

What are your memories of growing up in Bolton and have you ever visited?

Dawn Ward: Memories of my childhood in Bolton include going to chippy for a wet pea and a patty on a bar with my friends from school.

I love Bolton – I remember nights at Rockafellas on a Friday night for the under 16s.

I have fantastic memories and I still have very good friends there.

I actually had a business in Bolton for several years, a care home. I’m going back to Bolton again today, I was there the other week with my friend Sonya at Fanny’s bar (Heaton).

I love going back and always have a great time.

I think it’s the dry Nordic sense of humor that all the locals have – I love it.

Lauren Simon appeared to feature Bolton in the show’s adverts saying, ‘You don’t choose to go and live in Bolton’, what did you think of that?

Dawn Ward: Listen – Lauren is a nice girl and she means no harm. Sometimes she says things without thinking and it makes me curl my toes.

It’s not really something I would have said, but most of the time with Lauren it’s very ironic.

She sometimes says things for the shock factor.

But do I think she meant it or meant to say something bad or an insult? I hope not.

When did you first realize you had a talent for interior design?

Dawn Ward: Interior design, whether you have qualifications, whether you’ve been to college and trained as a designer, it comes from within – you have it or you don’t.

I started out building houses and developing properties and from there a client asked me to do some furniture for them and then that property led to another property then a third and before I knew it I had to hire more interior staff. because I was getting really busy and that’s where I am today.

I now employ some of the best designers and architects in the country and my portfolio includes completed projects not only in the UK but across Europe.

It’s hard work but I’m really living the dream!

What’s the best thing about living in Cheshire? And the worst?

Dawn Ward: The best thing about living in Cheshire is that it’s beautiful and very rural, the people are lovely, there are great restaurants and I have great friends here.

Regardless of the fact that I work all over Europe and probably spend 50% of my time in central London, I love coming back up north and back to Cheshire.

To be completely honest, I can’t find anything negative to say about it.

Do you have any upcoming charity events and why are they important to you?

Dawn Ward: In 2009 my youngest daughter Aston was born prematurely and had pneumothorax (her lungs burst) and spent two weeks in intensive care.

We finally brought her home at four weeks old and continued to live normally.

Then, when she was 16 weeks old, she contracted streptococcal meningitis.

We were told she had less than a 50 percent chance of surviving and, if she did, there was an 85 percent risk of brain damage, deafness and blindness.

I found myself praying for brain damage, but don’t let her die.

We were so lucky that she came out of the hospital with no side effects, so I thought I really wanted to make a difference.

Some people go through what we went through but don’t have the same positive outcome and we feel so blessed.

I will continue the rest of my life trying to make a difference in the lives of unhappy children and their families.

My next charity event that I will be hosting will be in June for the Caudwell Children at Bolesworth Castle.

I am a member of the charity’s committee and I really believe in what they are doing. It’s a great day and evening for the whole family.

Then, in September, I will host my annual prom, the crème de la crème, at my home. Sponsors and table sales are welcome.

You and Leanne Brown (wife of Sunderland footballer Wes) seem to be the closest, what do you like about her?

Dawn Ward: Leanne is one of my closest friends, we’ve been friends for 12 years and will be until the day we die.

She is extremely loyal and always tells you what she thinks, she has a beautiful heart and if you ever have a problem, she is always there.

Its greatest quality is that it is very fair.

Leanne and I argue from time to time and if she disagrees with something she will always tell me, but the one thing about our friendship is that we say what we say and move on. thing, never held a grudge and we’ve actually never fallen in over 12 years.

I love the girl in pieces.

What do you think of the “wag” label and the negative connotations that can come with it?

Dawn Ward: I don’t really have a problem with the wag label and I find that quite flattering because at my age – 41 – to be called a wag I don’t have to hurt because all these girls are very glamorous young women , beautiful.

So for me to be labeled as a wag is a bit of a compliment.

I’m not one to worry about negative reviews.

I always think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I tend not to focus on people’s negativity.

I know who I am and I work very hard and the most important thing in my life is my children and my family.

Would you like to see the show return for a second series?

Dawn Ward: Of course I would love to see the show come back, that would mean it’s a big hit and it’s fantastic to work on.

The viewing figures have been really good and when I’m old and wrinkled I can say to my grandkids ‘you know I was on a really big TV show’.

I love being part of a success story.

Do you have other projects in preparation?

Dawn Ward: I have a lot of work projects going on and I’m very busy working in London, Cheshire, Spain and the South of France.

I will be launching my range of soft furnishings and accessories in the next few months, so watch this space.
