David Letterman is an American television personality, comedian, writer and producer who rose to fame after hosting Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. He became the longest-serving talk show host, serving a total of 33 years from 1982 to 2015, after hosting a total of 6,028 episodes of Late Night and Late Show. - Michelle Cook (1968-1977) – Michelle and Letterman were high school friends and married on July 2, 1968 in Muncie, Indiana. They were a very young couple who had married in their early 20s. Unfortunately, they decided to divorce in October 1977 after spending almost 10 years together.
- Merrill Markoe (1978-1988) – After his divorce, David found camaraderie with Merrill Markoe, who was a former head writer and producer on Late Night . - He was considered a fan favorite to succeed the host of The Tonight Show . After Johnny Carson retired in 1992, NBC hired Jay Leno to host the show, prompting Letterman to leave NBC and start his own show, the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS at the same time. Both the shows and the hosts became competitors, vying for the highest rating throughout their tenure as hosts of the respective shows.
- He is partner of the Rahal Letterman LaniganRacing is a car racing team along with Bobby Rahal (former car racer) and businessman Michael Lanigan. The team was crowned champion at the 2004 Indianapolis 500 with driver Buddy Rice.
