Feherty had been sober for more than 10 years until shortly after his son Shey died of an overdose on his 29th birthday.
Feherty told Gumble during an interview that will air on HBO’s new episode of Real Sport.
“I was at a friend’s ranch and went alone. I thought, “You know what? I’ve been sober for 10 years. I’m tired of him. You know, I’m tired of being sober. I want to feel better. And I convinced myself that it would make me feel better.
“So there was a bottle of Irish whiskey there, which is, like, a crying angel on my tongue. But oddly enough, it didn’t – taste horrible. But I made myself drink more. I was like, “Hey, I got everything under control. I don’t need to drink so much. ”You know, the next day I did the same thing, and I was like, ‘Well, I’ve got it under control. ”Before I knew it, you know, it had me under control.’
Feherty, who is sober again, also opened up about how his son’s death is something he thinks about every day.
“I apologize to him every day. I’m sorry, son. You know, I wasn’t there. I…I mean I just wasn’t there. I was always gone. Times when I was drunk. The times when I was stoned. It could have been times that I would have spent with him.
