BIOGRAPHY OF DAVID ALABA

David Alaba (full name: David Olatukunbo Alaba) is an Austrian professional footballer who plays for German club Bayern Munich and the Austrian national team. He flourished as a left-back although he had a multitude of roles which include central midfield, central defence, right and left wing.

He was born in Vienna and started his career with his local club in Aspern, SV Aspern, in Donaustadt, the 22nd district, before joining the youth team of FK Austria Wien at the age of 10.

 

At SV Aspern he quickly rose through the ranks and in April 2008 he was named on the first team substitute bench for a Bundesliga game. He also played five times for Austria reserve side Wien before leaving in the summer of 2008 to join German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.

The Austrian national was born to George Alaba, an Austrian musician and his wife Gina Alaba. Gina is from the Philippines and migrated to work as a nurse while her father is a prince of Ogere, Nigeria (he is a Nigerian Yoruba). He is also a rapper and works as a DJ. In 1984 George Alaba started his studies in Vienna and after learning German for a few semesters, his interest in economics led him to the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

 

He then dropped out to focus on his career as a musician. He started as a DJ at the African Club in front of an international audience. His first CD was not a success. He obtained Austrian citizenship in the mid-1990s, which led to his call-up to the military. He was the first dark-skinned guard soldier and it got a lot of media attention.

David met his wife, Gina, a nurse of Filipino descent in 1988 and married her in 1996. Together they are the parents of Rose May Alaba, who earned a place in the ‘Popstars Girl Group BFF’ in the talent show “Popstars Mission Austria” from the Puls 4 transmitter and also works as a model, and football player David Alaba.

He reunited with his musical partner Petra Suk in 1997, with whom he performed as a duo Two in One. Their breakthrough came with the ‘Indian Song’, which ended up at number two on the Austrian charts. After seven years of cooperation, ended a patent dispute over the name of the group, whose disputes would have been beyond their financial possibilities, their career.

Alaba returned to his job as a DJ, this time in the “Gogobar Beverly Hills” in the center of Vienna. He gave up this job in favor of his children, whom he now supports in their careers.

He joined the German Bundesliga side in the summer of 2008 and started in the club’s youth system playing for the Under-17 and Under-19 sides, before being promoted to the squad. reserve for the 2009-10 season.

In August 2009 against Dynamo Dresden in a 3. Liga match, Alaba made his debut for Bayern Munich and scored his first professional goal for FC Bayern Munich II on August 29, 2009. For UEFA Champions League 2009- 2010 he was appointed to Bayern. The Munich team and assigned jersey number 27.

In January 2010, it was announced that Alaba would train with the first team for the remainder of the 2009–10 season, along with reserve teammates Diego Contento and Mehmet Ekici. On 10 February 2010, the three were named on the first-team substitute bench for the first time for a DFB-Pokal match against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Alaba joined the game in the 59th minute and after a minute on the pitch, and with his second touch of the game he set up Franck Ribéry to give Bayern a 3–2 lead. They eventually won 6-2.

He was Bayern’s youngest player in a competitive game, at 17 years, 7 months and 8 days. He made his UEFA Champions League debut on 9 March 2010 aged 17 years, 8 months and 13 days against ACF Fiorentina.

In January 2011, Alaba was loaned to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for a one-season spell. It was at Hoffenheim that he scored his first-ever Bundesliga goal later that month in a 2-2 draw with FC St. Pauli. At the club, Alaba played as a defensive midfielder for six months which he described as ‘fruitful’.

Return to Bayern Munich

After his loan spell at Hoffenheim ended, Alaba made his return to Bayern at the start of the 2011–12 season, becoming a regular first-team member. He scored his first league goal for Bayern in the 1–2 away loss to Hanover 96 on 23 October 2011. He also established himself as a starter for the club during the second half of the Bundesliga season 2011–12.

Alaba achieved a record for himself on 2 April 2013 by scoring the seventh fastest goal (25.02 seconds) in Champions League history and putting Bayern on the path to a 2- 0 against Juventus. On December 2, 2013, Alaba signed a new contract with Bayern Munich, which expires in 2018.

The 2013/2014 season saw Alaba play in a few competitions: the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea, the German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund and two FIFA Club World Cup matches; the first being against Guangzhou Evergrande and the second against Raja Casablanca.

He was voted left-back in the 2014 UEFA.com Team of the Year by users (354,067 votes) in January 2015 for the second consecutive time, after 2013. He extended his contract until 2021 , March 18, 2016.

Alaba played for his country Austria at the Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels before being called up to the Austria senior national team in October 2009 for a game against France. He was also the youngest player in the history of the Austrian national team on his debut. On 16 October 2012, he scored his first goal for Austria in a home World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan where Austria won 4–0.

He won the prestigious Austrian Footballer of the Year vote in 2011 at the age of 19. Alaba finished first with 21 points, just ahead of Dutch star Austria Wien Nacer Barazite (20 points) and Martin Harnik of VfB Stuttgart in the poll organized by APA (Austrian news agency) among the coaches of the ten Austrian Bundesliga clubs .

In December 2012, he received the award for the second consecutive year. On 10 September 2013, Alaba scored the only goal of the match against Ireland inside 84 minutes to give Austria a 1–0. He scored the final goal in Austria’s 3-0 victory in the final qualifier against the Faroe Islands. He ended the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign as Austria’s top scorer with six goals.

On 8 September 2015, he netted a 9th-minute penalty at the Panenka to open a 4–1 away win over Sweden at the Friends Arena in Solna. The result qualified Austria for UEFA Euro 2016, their first successful qualifying campaign for the continental championship.

He captained Austria for the first time on March 24, 2017, in a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Moldova which ended in a 2-0 win, coming on as a substitute in the absence of suspended captain Julian Baumgartlinger.
