Daryl Coley is a late American Christian singer who was best known as a member of the ensemble ‘Helen Stephens and the Voices of Christ’. He performed with Edwin Hawkins in the Edwin Hawkins Singers. He had died of diabetes on March 15, 2016.

Daryl Coley was born on October 30, 1955 in Berkeley, California, United States of America. His parents separated when he was five years old.

 

He was raised along with his two brothers by his mother in a strong Christian home. He used to sing in the Oakland Children’s Choir, in California. He learned to play the clarinet and the piano during his childhood.

He had attended Castlemont High School and was an outstanding student at his school and college. He is an American national and is of white ethnicity.

Musical career

Daryl Coley began his musical career playing with Edwin Hawkins in the Edwin Hawkins Singers in 1977. The musician played keyboards for The Hawkins Family until leaving the group in 1983 to collaborate with James Cleveland .

 

Later, he worked as music director for Tramaine Hawkins after she launched her solo career. He had worked with popular music artists like Sylvester and Pete Escovedo .

He subsequently collaborated with jazz artists such as Rodney Franklin and Nancy Wilson and pop artists such as Fire and Wind and Earth’s Philip Bailey .

He had also provided the singing voice for Bleeding Gums Murphy in an episode of The Simpsons, ‘Dancin’ Homer’.

Daryl released his debut solo album Just Daryl in 1986 on First Epistle/Plumline Records. He was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album was later re-released in 2006.

Later in 1990, he released It’s Just in Time: Live from Los Angeles on Sparrow Records, and it had peaked at #3 on the gospel charts. She then released When the Music Stops in 1992, which reached #1 on the gospel charts.

Death: diagnosed with diabetes

In 1991, Daryl Coley became ill and had flu-like symptoms. So, he visited his doctor and discovered that he had been diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Diseases had caused him temporary blindness.

After battling diabetes, Coley died on March 15, 2016 . Her son Hers Te’Ceion Coley had shared an Instagram post to confirm the death of her father.

He was 60 years old.
