Controversies
In 2018, the Cable Newspaper claimed that Abiodun was involved in certificate falsification. As a result of the Pandora Papers leaks, the Premium Times reported on Abiodun’s involvement in two offshore entities in the British Virgin Islands, a recognised tax haven. The investigation stated that Abiodun owned and was the sole director of both Marlowes Trading Corporation and Heyden Petroleum Limited. In apparent contravention of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, as neither business was declared when Abiodun was elected Governor. Abiodun himself dodged questions regarding the matter. But an associate of Abiodun stated that the governor intended to dissolve the firms but failed to notice that they had not yet been disbanded.
In March 2022, SaharaReporters released the criminal record of Abiodun, who was imprisoned in 1986 for credit card fraud in Miami Dade, Florida, USA. The governor was reported to have adopted a fictitious name (Shawn Michael Davids) to disguise his criminal identity. According to the report, Abiodun was imprisoned for committing criminal offences such as credit card fraud, petty theft, and check forgery. On November 7, 1986, he was detained for assaulting and wounding a police officer in an attempt to resist custody. His fingerprint was run through the criminal database as he was being processed at the station, and it was revealed that the Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun being processed for detention was the same as Shawn Michael Davids.
