Danny Glover is a veteran black actor with countless titles behind him. However, his life is not only cinema, since long before becoming an actor he was already a committed activist, a facet that he has never abandoned.

Many actors take advantage of their fame to help others and fight for the causes they believe to be just. The case of Danny Glover is the opposite. The son of political activists, he was born in San Francisco on July 22, 1946. From his youth he was involved in defending the rights of his race, and activism has marked his entire life . He attended San Francisco State College, where he met his wife Asake Bomani, whom he married in 1975. The couple have one son and a demanding life together.

Glover’s professional life began in a government office, until he joined a group of black actors who had founded a company at the San Francisco Conservatory. Seduced by the world of acting, Danny traded the office for the Broadway stage. However, what he did not abandon was the most committed facet of him. Danny has never cared what people think of him, so he hasn’t cut a hair when it comes to championing his cause. He has not cared that they have arrested him or that public opinion has criticized his relations with questionable world leaders, such as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez. That is to say, he has never relegated his political side to the acting side, as many others in Hollywood do.

His acting career began in the television series BJ and the Bear (1979). A few months later he got to be one of the inmates who shared jail with Clint Eastwood in Escape from Alcatraz . Given his political and social commitment, anyone might think that Danny’s career is not very prolific, but just the opposite is true. In addition, the Californian not only accumulates titles, but a great diversity of genres. In his filmography there are dramas such as In a place of the heart (1984), Grand Canyon, the soul of the city (1991) or Beloved (1998); thrillers like Sole Witness (1985), or Kidnapping(1997), where he showed his darkest facet playing a disturbing provincial who gets Dennis Quaid to have a hard time; comedies like Operación elefante (1995), Two stooges soaking (1997) or the recent Rewind, please , where he has been the owner of a peculiar video store; and of course action, Predator 2 (1990), as a substitute for Arnold Schwarzenegger , or Shooter: the shooter  (2007), where he once again showed his most wicked side. Up to here is the list of the genres considered most common in the cinema, but Glover has gone through many more, such as the western with Silverado (1985), the horror with Saw(2004) and the musical drama with Dreamgirls (2006).

According to the patterns of this profile, someone can miss a series of titles that seem essential in the filmography of someone like Glover. That is, films with a committed theme. Obviously this type of cinema fits Danny like a glove and this is demonstrated by titles such as Bopha! (1993) or Boesman & Lena (2000), opposed to South African apartheid. This issue was dealt with in other films such as the telefilm Mandela (1987), where he played the aforementioned leader. But he not only defended the rights of his race in other countries, as he also had titles that spoke of the past and present situation of blacks in the United States. In this section you can find films such as the TV movies In Search of the American Dream(1996), Freedom Song (2000), or the brilliant Manderlay (2005) by Lars Von Trier .

The collector of this extensive filmography became famous thanks to Steven Spielberg and his drama The Color Purple (1985). In it, Glover perfectly played Whoopi Goldberg ‘s abusive husband . This diabolical vision that the public had known, soon changed to a much more endearing one thanks to Lethal Weapon (1987). With Mel Gibson he formed a police couple that will go down in movie history. The film knew how to perfectly mix the doses of humor and action as well as the possibilities of its two characters, who in principle are polar opposites. The success of the film made it possible for Richard Donnerwill feature the two actors to play Sergeants Riggs and Murtaugh in the four films in the saga.

Among Danny’s most recent works are his stints on the hit television series Five Brothers , where he has been a political adviser helping Kitty and Robert in the campaign, and the upcoming Blindness , by Fernando Meirelles . Even so, Glover’s working life does not develop only along the paths of interpretation. In 2002 he made his directorial debut with the drama Just a Dream , and now he is facing his second project behind the scenes. He is about to start filming Toussaint , a film that will star Don Cheadle. The film is based on true events and tells the story of the man who led the slave revolution in Haiti in the 18th century. The fact of the matter is that Danny is going to make this film with money obtained from the Venezuelan congress, the country that supports the film. It is precisely these personal relationships of the actor that annoy more than one person, who does not understand how he can be a friend of Hugo Chávez. Some adverse opinions that to date have not managed to stop the career of the controversial Glover.
