There he was bullied for being Jewish and “posh”. He had to master the local accent as well as the mannerisms, and credits this as his first convincing performance. His parents had to send him to Sevenoaks Independent School in Kent in 1968 after finding his behavior too wild. At Sevenoaks School he was introduced to woodworking, fishing and acting. His contempt for the school grows.

After two years he transferred to another independent school, Bedales in Petersfield, Hampshire. His sister was studying there. Daniel made his film debut at the age of 14 in Sunday Bloody Sunday where he starred in an uncredited role. Her family then moved to Lemmons, the north London home of Kingsley Amis and Elizabeth Jane Howard in 1972 for a few weeks. Her father had pancreatic cancer.

Howard had invited them to Lemmons as a place where they could rest and recuperate. His father died that year in May. By the time Daniel left Bedales, he had diminished his unruly attitude and needed to make a career choice. He left Bedales in 1975. Daniel, although he excelled on stage at the National Youth Theater in London, applied for a five-year apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker.

However, he was rejected due to lack of experience. He attended Bristol Old Vic Theater School where he studied for three years alongside Miranda Richardson. He played at the Bristol Old Vic. At one point Daniel doubled for Pete Postlethwaite. In 1994, Daniel starred in the film In the name of the father.
