Dan Gilroy
An interesting behind-the-scenes debut promises this Californian a future with many successes. Nightcrawler is a dark, murky film whose main character eats up the screen.
Daniel Christopher Gilroy was born on June 24, 1959 in California, United States. His artistic gene runs through his veins, since he comes from a family dedicated to the world of communication and cinema. His father is Pulitzer Prize winner Frank D. Gilroy and his mother, Ruth Dorothy, is a writer. In addition, his brother is the well-known screenwriter and director Tony Gilroy , with whom he worked on the script for The Bourne Legacy (2012) and his twin, John Gilroy, is a film editor.
Dan grew up in New York and graduated in 1981 from Dartmouth College. Before beginning his journey as a director, he grew up writing the stories that would later be represented on screen. It took him eleven years, from his graduation, to participate in a feature film. He co-wrote the sci-fi thriller Freejack: No Identity , which featured singer Mick Jagger. His first text was for Betting on the Edge , a sports betting drama starring Al Pacino , Matthew McConaughey , and Gilroy’s future wife since 1993, Rene Russo; just a year later, in 2006, he co-wrote The Fall: Alexandria’s Dream , a remake of Yo Ho Ho ., which is about the friendship that is forged between a girl and a stuntman during her stay in a hospital; In 2011 he collaborated again in the writing of Pure Steel , an interesting futuristic action family film that tells the story of Charlie Kenton ( Hugh Jackman ), a former boxer who begins to train a robot to fight in combat.
After the aforementioned spin-off of the Bourne saga, Dan Gilroy launched into directing and in 2014 premiered his debut feature, the dark and disturbing Nightcrawler . The film was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay and garnered rave reviews, largely thanks to actor Jake Gyllenhaal ‘s metamorphosis . It is a harsh criticism of the media and their lack of scruples when it comes to censoring what they show. It’s agile, well paced, and has some well-shot action sequences. It was also the opportunity to work with his wife since 1992, the actress Rene Russo , with whom he has his only daughter, Rose.
Later he has addressed the world of law and civil rights causes in Roman J. Israel, Esq. , starring Denzel Washington , and with an approach linked to terror, he has looked at the art world in Velvet Buzzsaw , where he repeats with Gyllenhaal and Russo.
