In 1990, Austin developed on its own. His work on Motown led him to work on albums by other artists signed to the label – the first being little-known band Glasswurk.Austin then helmed the bulk of early albums by Motown signees Another Bad Creation and Boyz II Men.

Austin was then recruited by LA Reid and Babyface to work on a few projects for their record label, LaFace Records. The duo recruited him to work on TLC’s debut album. From there, he secured a deal for his short-lived band Highland Place Mobsters, which was Austin joining Glasswurk members who had already signed to Motown.
