Grammy Award winner Crystal Gayle is an American country music legend known for her hit songs, ‘Talking in Your Sleep’ and ‘Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.’ She is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has a star close to her sister Lynn’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 1983, Gayle was listed as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine. She was also named Most Promising Female Artist of the Year by Music City News in 1975. She married Bill Gatzimos and together they have two children.
Early life and education of Crystal Gayle
Crystal Gayle was born as Brenda Gail Gatzimos on January 9, 1951 in Paintsville, Kentucky, United States. She is American and belongs to the White-American ethnicity.
Gayle is the daughter of Melvin ‘Ted’ Webb (1906-1959) and Clara Marie Ramey Webb (1912-1981). Her mother worked in a nursing home and her father was a coal miner and subsistence farmer, who died of Coalworker’s pneumoconiosis.
Gayle has seven siblings, Melvin Webb (December 4, 1929 – July 1, 1993), Loretta Lynn (born April 14, 1932), Herman Webb (born 1934), Jay Lee Webb (February 12, 1937 – July 31, 1996), Donald Ray Webb (April 2, 1941 – October 13, 2017), Peggy Sue (born March 24, 1943), and Betty Ruth Webb (born 1946).
Three of her seven siblings, Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue and Jay Lee Webb , are renowned singers. American actress Ladybug Spacek played the character of her sister Loretta Lynn in the film The Coal Miner’s Daughter .
Gayle was just four years old when her family moved to Wabash, Indiana. She used to be a shy girl but she liked to sing. Her mother encouraged her to sing for visitors and guests at her home, which helped her get rid of her nervousness.

Crystal Gayle began her professional career in music with the release of the single ‘I’ve Cried (The Blue Right of My Eyes)’ in 1970. Loretta Lynn was the song’s lyricist and it peaked at number 23 on the Billboard chart. country singles chart
At that time, most of her singles were written by Lynn and she was also asked by the label to sing in a similar style to her sister. However, this approach failed as she did not even reappear in the Country Top 40, despite a regular appearance on The Countryside , Blake Emmon television show. In 1974, Ella’s single Restless by Ella was No. 39 on the Billboard.
Gayle then left Decca Records and signed with United Artists, giving her creative freedom. She released her first album, Crystal Gayle in 1974. The single ‘Wrong Way Again’ peaked at the first top ten country hit, charting at number 6.
She released I’ll Get Over You in 1976, the first of her 20 number 1 singles on the country singles chart, at number 71 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at number 40 on the adult contemporary chart.
The following year, Gayle released, ‘Never Miss Something Really Good (Until He Says Goodbye)’ peaked at #1 and ‘I’ll Do It All Again’, peaked at #2.
Gayle remembered what her sister Loretta Lynn had told her:
”You record what I couldn’t record, you do MOR, in the middle of the road,” and that was the best advice I could get. I don’t think I would have made it if I had gone down the road and made the music that my sister did. They would only have compared me to her.
In 1977, Gayle released her single, ‘Don’t Make My Brown Eyes Blue’ , the biggest hit of her career. The song peaked at number 1 on the Cashbox Top 100 Singles pop chart and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It received a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, while the song received a Grammy for Country Song of the Year for its writer, Richard Leigh .
The song helped her album We Must Believe in Magic to be the first certified platinum album by any female country artist. She subsequently toured the world including Great Britain and China; they became the first artists to record a performance on the Great Wall of China.
After the success, Gayle and her producer began working on more crossover (country and pop) music. Consecutively for two years, she won Country Music Association Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1977 and 1978, respectively. Similarly, Gayle received the Academy of Country Music three times (1976-1977 and 1979).
Gayle released her next single, “Ready for the Times to Get Better,” a re-recorded version of the track from her first album Crystal, her fourth No. 1 country hit, but it failed to reach Top 40 pop. In 1978, she released an album titled, When I Dream , which consisted of 12 songs, ‘ Talking in your dreams ‘ and ‘Why have you left for whom you left me?’ ranked #1 in country hits. Gayle’s last Top-20 solo pop hit was Midway from her album, Miss the Mississippi .
She was also seen in the fourth season of The Muppet Show in its second episode. Later, she released several singles that were commercially successful and even helped her win awards. Some of her hit songs are ‘It’s Like We Never Said Goodbye’, ‘If You Ever Change Your Mind’, ‘Until I Gain Control Again’, ‘Our Love Is On The Fault Line’, ‘Baby , what about you?’, ‘The sound of goodbye’ and ‘Departing’ among others.
Gayle along with Gary Morris sang the theme song for the soap opera Another World . They even performed the song at the Daytime Emmy Awards, which became the show’s theme song until March 1996.
She also sang the theme song for the 1983 television series, Masquerade . In the 1990s she released two studio albums. I’m Not Gonna Worry (1990) and Three Good Reasons (1992), but unfortunately both albums failed to chart.
Gayle released two gospel albums, Someday (1995) and He’s Beautiful (1997). Subsequently, he released five albums on the market, Crystal Gayle Sings the Heart and Soul of Hoagy Carmichael (1999), My Arms (2000), All My Tomorrows (2003), Crystal Gayle in Concert (2005) and Live! In January 2007, American habitual car thief Christopher Daniel Gay stole Gayle’s tour bus while trying to escape custody and headed for Tennessee.
