The data compared with 37,314 new cases reported on Friday and 114 deaths. More so, coronavirus cases in the UK were highest this week on Friday when 37,314 new infections were recorded alongside 114 deaths.
Recently it comes to light high levels of Covid-19 were found in or near Wembley stadium on the day of the Euro 2020 final, according to official data.
Public Health England (PHE) said 2,295 people were likely to have been infectious and a further 3,404 people potentially caught Covid at the July 11 final between Italy and England.
PHE’s deputy medical director Jenifer Smith said the match data showed how easily Covid-19 can spread in “close contact”.
Meanwhile, Dr Chris Smith, consultant virologist and lecturer at Cambridge University, added that a decision on booster jabs should not be “rash, [or] rushed” but that the UK risks “unstitching all of the good work we’ve done so far” if large portions of the population lose immunity because of vaccines “waning in their effectiveness”.
