When we look back in time, almost the entire world was ruled by a monarch, king, or queen. However, many countries still have some form of monarchy. Currently, many countries have a monarchy ruling over them.
Monarchs’ power varies depending on the country’s traditions and language. The majority of monarchies are constitutional, with largely ceremonial roles. Some have absolute power, while others are elective, and one is a co-regency, which occurs when two or more people share a monarchical position.

10. The Netherlands
The Netherlands has been a constitutional monarchy since 1814. This means that the monarch’s position is established by the Constitution. The King is the head of state, and the government is formed by him and his ministers. In a constitutional monarchy, the head of state is subject to ministerial oversight.
King Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother as monarch in April 2013. Queen Maxima is the King’s wife.

9. Denmark
The Danish monarchy is a popular institution in Denmark, and it is one of the world’s oldest. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, the current monarch, can trace her ancestors back to the first Viking kings of Denmark over 1,000 years ago.
The monarch’s dynastic family is the Danish royal family. Except for Queen Margrethe II, all members of the Danish royal family hold the title of Prince/Princess of Denmark.

8. Thailand
Thailand’s monarchy (whose monarch is known as the King of Thailand or, historically, the King of Siam) refers to the Kingdom of Thailand’s constitutional monarchy and monarch (formerly Siam).
The King of Thailand is the country’s head of state and the head of the ruling Chakri Royal House.
Thailand’s King is Vajiralongkorn. He is King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s and Queen Sirikit’s only son. His father appointed him crown prince in 1972 when he was 20 years old.

6. Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is a Muslim-based monarchy. The government is led by the King, who is also the military commander-in-chief. The King appoints a Crown Prince to assist him with his duties.
King Abdulaziz Al-Saud (1882-1953) founded the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Saudi Arabia has been ruled by the sons of King Abdulaziz since 1953. The current ruler, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, ascended to the throne in January 2015.

The King of Cambodia is the Kingdom of Cambodia’s head of state. The power of the King is limited to that of a symbolic figurehead whom people are expected to love and respect. To the Khmer people, the monarch also represents peace, stability, and prosperity. Cambodia has had an elected monarch since 1993, making it one of the world’s few elective monarchies. The king is elected for life by the Royal Council of the Throne, which consists of several senior political and religious figures, from among members of the Norodom and Sisowath bloodlines who are at least 30 years old.
Cambodia’s King is Norodom Sihamoni. He was crowned King on October 14, 2004, a week after his father, Norodom Sihanouk, abdicated.

4. Brunei
Brunei is one of the world’s few remaining absolute monarchies, and the only one in Asia. As the Sultan of Brunei is an absolute monarch, he is both the head of state and the head of government. He is the King, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, and Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister.
The Sultan of Brunei is Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 29th and current Yang di-Pertuan (Sultan) of Brunei. He has also served as Prime Minister of the country since its independence from British rule in 1984.

A Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state in the Commonwealth of Nations that has Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. Each realm functions as an independent state, equal with the other realms and nations of the Commonwealth.
A Commonwealth nation is any of the Commonwealth of Nations member states that have previously shared British dominance but do not necessarily have the current British monarch as their head of state.
These countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Papua New Guinea, St Christopher and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Tuvalu, Barbados, Grenada, Solomon Islands, and St Lucia.
2. Belgium
Belgium was a part of the Netherlands for 15 years before becoming independent in 1830. Since that time, seven Belgian monarchs have reigned as ‘King of the Belgians.’ Based on a constitutional monarchy, the kings of Belgium were appointed through a strict lineage system dating back to Leopold I.
King Albert II announced his abdication in July 2013. On National Day, a few weeks later, Prince Philippe took the oath and became the seventh King of Belgium.

1. Malaysia
The Malaysian monarchy is made up of nine hereditary ethnic Malay royals who form the Conference of Rulers, each of whom rules over a separate state in Malaysia (Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Terengganu). Except for Negeri Sembilan and Perlis, who use the titles ‘Yang di-Pertuan Besar’ and ‘Raja,’ seven of these kings use the title ‘Sultan.’
The king is elected by these nine rulers and reigns for five years under the current system of election, which has been in place since the end of colonial rule in 1957.
In a rotational system in which the order of succession among states is predetermined, the nine royals elect the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong from among themselves every five years. After his predecessor Muhammad V of Kelantan abdicated, the current Sultan Abdullah of Pahang was the next in line to the throne and became king after being confirmed by the Council.
