Clive owen
At forty years old, the protagonist of King Arthur was until recently a true unknown in the Hollywood court. And it is that his roles were not exactly attractive.
He looks like a pimp who pulls on his back. But, precisely, that is his best weapon. The face of few friends of him, of being seriously annoyed or pissed off with the world, has earned him roles with few words and a lot of an inner world, hidden and not at all peaceful. Anyone who has seen his films knows that Clive Owen is good at dark, unstable and uncool types, like Dealer ‘s Jack , the film that he made known to the world of cinema. Since then his fondness for fixing a threatening look on anyone who even dares to ask him for a cigarette, that perpetual pose of annoyance, has become his hallmark.
Clive Owen was born on October 3, 1964, in a small town near Coventry (England). He did not have a pleasant childhood, since his father left the family when he was three years old. He grew up with his mother and his stepfather, and has four siblings. While attending school, the world of acting already captivated him, and at the age of 13 he participated in the play “Oliver”. At the age of twenty he managed to be accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He trained for three years, while participating in works such as “The Lady From the Sea”. Later, in 1988, he joined the Young Vic Theater Company. And there, while playing Romeo in Shakespeare’s immortal play, he fell in love with Juliet and not exactly with her character. The actress was Sarah Jane Fenton and in 1995 she became his wife. They currently have two daughters, Hannah and Eve.
His debut took place in Vroom (1998), without much echo. But he was already clear about his path: “Theater is like exercising. I feel like it’s kind of healthy, but I don’t love it as much as I love the movies. A bad experience in the theater can be depressive”. So, he continued to appear in films, most of them went on television and some of his roles received good reviews, such as Stephen Crane ‘s in the “Chancer” series. Between series and series, he interspersed some work for the cinema, although his first films were quite dark, not to say unpleasant: in With My Eyes Closed (1991) he had an incestuous relationship and in Bent(1997) was a homosexual. Those depressing profiles, however, gave him the role of his life. Dealer (1998) made him known to the world and achieved notable success in the United States: “I’ve never been interested in playing good guys. I am attracted to dangerous characters. They are generally much more interesting roles and I’m not afraid to do them. In Dealer my character does not know where he comes from. You don’t know if he’s a good guy or a bad guy. But that’s how people are in general, right?
In his next job, Clive Owen changed register, although always maintaining his same stiff appearance, to play the pleasant comedy Flower Power (2000), alongside the great Helen Miren. A year later he was cast as the lead in Hire , a riveting series of eight BMW commercial shorts produced by David Fincher . They are original pieces where they exist, action thrillers directed by the likes of Wong Kar Wai , Tony Scott , Joe Carnahan , Guy Rirchie, Ang Lee , John Frankenheimer , Alejandro González Iñárritu and John Woo .. There it is. In the meantime, he had time to disturb again in the remarkable Gosford Park (2001), by Robert Altman , and to give Matt Damon the occasional spark in The Bourne Identity (2002).
Later, already being known by the moviegoing public, he worked again with Mike Hodges (director of Dealer ) in I’ll Sep When I’m Dead , not released in Spain, and fell in love with Angelina Jolie in Loving Dangerously , both from 2003. The last we’ve seen of him is King Arthur , where he embodies a king quite different from the myth we know. And it must be said that the dry paper is perfect for him. He is about to premiere the long-awaited Mike Nichols drama Closer (of which he was already a part in a theatrical version), along with Julia Roberts , Jude Law and Natalie Portman .. And among his projects is the thriller Sin City , which meets more than a dozen famous actors, including Rosario Dawson , Benicio del Toro or Brittany Murphy .
