His parents Roger and Geri Hayes, formerly Jesuit seminary attendees and schoolteachers, respectively, now work for the New York City Department of Health and Education, respectively.
Hayes moved his family to New York when he was young and completed his studies at Hunter College High School in New York City. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Brown University. Raised Catholic, he later became part of a student theater group called Production Workshop while in college.
