Christopher James Berman or “Boomer” as he is so often called, is an American television sportscaster who rose to fame after his 1979 stint on the sports network ESPN . Chris Berman was one of the most distinguished voices to ever work for the cable network. He was instrumental in building a legacy for his SportsCenter show and ESPN himself.

Chris Berman was born on May 10, 1955 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was raised in a Jewish family with parents Peggy Shevell, who worked as a reporter for Time magazine, and James Keliner Berman, an executive chairman of Vise business. He went to Hackley School and graduated in 1970. Berman graduated from Brown University in 1977 with a degree in history. While attending Brown University, Berman had already begun working as a commentator and sports director for the school radio station. After graduating, Berman worked for different media platforms. One of them as a weekend sports anchor for a TV station in Hartford that only paid him $23 a day.
In October 1979, a little-known 24-year-old Berman was offered a job as an anchor for a young but growing ESPN sports cable network. Berman began serving as an anchor for SportsCenter for its 3 a.m. edition. Since then he has hosted, commentated, anchored for countless shows for the network. Berman has been on the air for almost three decades. This makes him one of the longest serving employees to have worked for ESPN. His incomparable voice, work ethic, love of sport and versatile talent helped him reach the heights. He was even named “National Sportscaster of the Year” by the National Sportscasters and Sports Association, six times.

In 1983, Berman married Katherine “Kathy” Alexinski and later became a father to two children, Meredith and Douglas. However, his wife Kathy died on May 10, 2017 following a traffic collision in Woodbury.
