BIOGRAPHY OF CHRIS ARCHER
Chris Archer is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Tampa Bay Rays.
He attended Clayton High School in Clayton, North Carolina. Archer was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB Draft. After being traded to the Chicago Cubs and then the Rays, he made his MLB debut in 2012. Archer was selected to the Games of the 2015 and 2017 MLB stars

Tuesday’s Pirates trade for Chris Archer is the kind of move every fan should hope their team makes. The Bucs are closer to the edge of the playoff hunt than the playoffs, but they’re still very much in the hunt, and Archer is a potential number two starter under the team’s control for three years beyond that. -this. It’s the perfect shot for a team that needs to take risks but can’t afford to get burned.
In exchange for their nominal staff ace, the Rays are getting real value out of Pittsburgh. Austin Meadows is an outfielder who didn’t tear up ball coverage in Triple-A but looked great in his few weeks of major league action this year. Tyler Glasnow is a firefighter who’s bad now but could be great later. Both are former top prospects, cheap and with plenty of potential at just 23 and 24 years old
Its good. Archer is 29, relatively cheap himself, and has a right arm cannon. His 4.31 ERA isn’t exciting, but his underlying metrics all point to him being a better pitcher than that. That should help him get out of the AL East and into NL Central, and he can stay in the pitcher’s ballpark. It’s not right that the Pirates love fast balls and Archer’s heating has been smoked this year, but that doesn’t mean they’re getting into a train wreck. The pirates – the pirates! – made the biggest trade of the Deadline, and that’s exciting for a fanbase that’s used to the other side of those deals.

In January 2011, the Cubs traded Archer to the Tampa Bay Rays along with Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, Robinson Chirinos and Sam Fuld for Matt. At the start of the season, he was ranked the 27th top prospect in baseball by Baseball America.
Pitching for the Southern League’s Montgomery Biscuits, Archer had a 5.85 ERA through the first two months of the season and a 5.27 ERA at the end of the first half of the season. In the second half, he made a turnover, going 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA. He received promotion to the Durham Bulls from the Class AAA International League, making two starts for the Bulls at the end of the season and allowing only one run.

Archer was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. He later joined the rookie-level Gulf Coast Indians after signing. Chris also pitched a game for the rookie-level Appalachian League Burlington Indians. He remained with the Gulf Coast Indians to start the season in 2007. In 2008, Archer had a 4–8 win-loss record in 27 games started for Lake County captains of the Atlantic League Class A South. On December 31, 2008, he was traded along with John Gaub and Jeff Stevens to the Chicago Cubs.Archer pitched for the Class A Midwest League Peoria Chiefs in the 2009 season. In 2010, Archer had a 15–3 win-loss record with an average of 2.34 points earned between the Daytona Cubs the Class A-Advanced Florida State League and the Tennessee Smokies of the Class AA Southern League. With Daytona, he had a 41 innings pitched streak without allowing a earned run.
He was named the Cubs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and the Cubs added him to their 40-player roster to prevent him from being selected by another team in the Rule 5 Draft. the season he pitched for the United States National Baseball Team in the 2011 Pan American Games qualifying tournament. By defeating the Cuban National Baseball Team, USA Baseball qualified Archer’s game from the international performance of the year.

According to Fancred’s Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees are “not likely” to acquire the right-handed starter before Tuesday’s no-derogation deadline. Heyman explained that it didn’t make “much sense” for the second-place American League East team to trade for him unless it moved Sonny Gray.
Archer has a 4.31 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 96 innings this season after posting an ERA of over 4.00 in each of the past two years. Despite the strong but unspectacular numbers, he is still only 29 and finished with an ERA below 3.50 for three consecutive seasons from 2013 to 2015.
The two-time All-Star would also bring an element of team control that many deadline acquisitions don’t, as he isn’t ready to be an unrestricted free agent until 2022, according to Spotrac.
While the Yankees are 5.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East and 13th in the league in ERA starting pitchers, according to ESPN.com, the rotation has stabilized lately thanks to the emergence of Gray. He allowed just two earned runs in his final 16.1 innings, giving New York a weapon alongside JA Happ, Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia.
With Happ now in the rotation and Gray rebounding, there’s less need for Archer as New York seeks a playoff spot.
