Chip’s family moved to Dallas, Texas when he was a child, where he graduated from Grapevine High School . After high school, he began a career as a baseball player. He represented Northlake College in Irving, Texas for one year.

  1. Joanna Gaines (2001-Present) – Although Joanna and Chip attended the same university, they never met because their enrollment years and undergraduate degrees were different.
    Chip first spotted Joanna in her family photo, taken by her father at his Flintstones tire shop. Oddly enough, he knew intuitively that one day he would marry Joanna when he saw the picture on the wall. He started visiting the Flintstones shop frequently, until one day in 2001, he got lucky and ran into Joanna. Chip struck up a conversation with her, claiming he recognized her from the Flintstones commercials in which Joanna acted as a model for her father’s business.

Chip was a baseball and football player After high school, his primary interests were construction and home improvement. In October 2017 he met professional runner Gabriele Grunewald aka Gabe in Central Park, NYC where she shared her story of training and going through 4 cancers.

This meeting inspired Chip to host the inaugural Silo District Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K in Waco, Texas. It also inspired Chip to renew his relationship with sports. He hired Gabe as his personal running coach who planned his weekly training schedule in preparation for the upcoming May 2018 marathon. He completed his first run in a time of 5:21:54 and managed to raise $250,000 for training for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation, which provides all proceeds to cancer research.

Chip takes care of 60 animals living alone on a 40 acre farm with his family. There’s plenty of room for fresh, organic produce and free-range eggs, which form the staple of their meals at home. He especially likes a hearty breakfast, which he cooks himself for the whole family. It usually consists of pancakes, eggs and bacon.

Since Chip and his wife don’t cook every day, their Magnolia Table Restaurant and Healthy Meal Food Trucks at Magnolia Market offer a wide variety of nutritious and fulfilling dishes. He doesn’t like the popular healthy breakfast of avocado toast.

  1. Chip’s first project was a lawn mowing business, which he started in his sophomore year, followed by a washing and folding business.
  2. For a short time he sold firecrackers on a roadside.
  3. He turned his first property around after he finished investing in college in 1998 using the savings from his previous entrepreneurial ventures. Chip sold the renovated property after 6 months and the profit he made matched the annual profit from his first business.
  4. During the first 2 years of his marriage, Chip was constantly being nagged by his father-in-law to get a real job. He was so broke that Joanna could search for essential supplies with only the cash he carried in his pocket. The couple renovated properties together on a reasonable budget and often defaulted on payments to suppliers.
  5. Living and caring for a 40-acre farmhouse was Chip’s secret passion, derived from a grandfather’s ranch ownership in Wichita Falls.
  6. Cows, chickens, pigs, goats, turkeys, horses and dogs live on his farm. Chip gets up at 4am every morning to take care of her.
