Chingy (Howard Bailey Jr.), is an American rapper, singer, producer and actor. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where he started rapping in his late teens. He toured with Nelly as an opening act in the summer of 2002, becoming a protege of Ludacris, who signed him to his newly formed label as Disturbing Tha Peace (DTP).

The rapper’s first summer single, 2003’s “Right Thurr,” put him on the music map as a good-time rapper who specialized in upbeat, club-friendly beats and simplistic lyrics delivered in a style. nursery rhymes. His 2003 debut album, Jackpot, sold two million copies.

Carrier start

Ludacris and his manager, Chaka Zulu, signed Chingy to their fledgling label Disturbing Tha Peace. The Southern hip hop track “Right Thurr” surged in popularity and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

2003: Jackpo

On July 15, 2003, Chingy’s debut album Jackpot was released on Disturbing tha Peace. Ludacris brokered a deal to distribute the album through Capitol Records as he was unable to secure a distribution deal through Def Jam. Guest appearances included Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Murphy Lee, I-20, Raindrop, Playaz Circle’s Tity Boi, Trina and Jermaine Dupri.

Fueled by ‘Right Thurr’, Jackpot produced the hit ‘One Call Away’ which featured J-Weav and ‘Holidae In’ featuring Snoop Dogg and Ludacris. The next album The Trak Starz was produced by the St. Louis production team. The album received critical acclaim and was certified Platinum by the RIAA within a year of Jackpot’s release.

2004–2005: Powerballin ’

Chingy released their second album, Powerballin’, on November 16, 2004 through Slot-A-Lot Records and Capitol Records. The album peaked at number 10 on the charts and featured the hit single ‘Balla Baby’. The album featured guest appearances from artists such as R. Kelly, Bun B, Lil Wayne, Lil Flip, Janet Jackson and David Banner, Nate Dogg and Get It Boyz. Powerballin’ sold over one million copies and received Platinum certification from the RIAA on March 21, 2005.

He was also on one of George Lopez’s episodes as himself. The 8th song from his album “I Do” is featured on the soundtrack of the 2004 video game Need for Speed: Underground 2.

2006: Hood Star

Chingy’s third album Hoodstar was released on September 19, 2006. The album featured Mr. Collipark, who was longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland and Mannie Fresh. His summer single, ‘Pullin Me Back’ (featuring R&B actor-singer Tyrese), would find him topping the Hot Rap Tracks chart and helping Hoodstar debut at number eight on his chart, but the Follow-up single ‘Dem Jeans’, which featured Jermaine Dupri, did worse although the album went gold. Hoodstar’s other singles were ‘Brand New Kicks’ and ‘Hands Up’.

2007–2008: Hate or Love

Chingy was unhappy with how he thought Capitol promoted their urban artists. In 2007 he jumped ship and returned to DTP Records, then part of the Def Jam family. Asked about his move, the St. Louis rapper said, “I don’t think Capitol really knew how to work urban artists, they’re really stuck in pop and they didn’t know how to market me.”

Chingy’s fourth studio album, Hate It or Love It, featured production from Scott Storch, Timbaland and Cool and Dre. The lead single, “Fly Like Me,” featured Amerie. It was released on December 18, 2007 with guest appearances from Ludacris, Bobby Valentino, Steph Jones, Trey Songz, Rick Ross and Anthony Hamilton.

The album debuted at age 84 on the Billboard 200, selling 30,000 copies, making it his first album not to break the Top 10. Hate It or Love It was not released in the UK. United, marking Chingy’s first album outside the country.

2010–2013 No Risk, No Reward

In 2012, Chingy announced that he was working on his next (fifth) studio album titled No Risk No Reward, DTP which was supposed to be released in 2012, but as of June 2016 it continues to be delayed due to lack of funding . ‘Superhero’, featuring Full Dekk Music Group artist Chris Woodhouse, was supposed to be the lead single from his album.

Chingy then announced that he would be releasing a mixtape titled Jackpot Back. It was released on March 3, 2012. Chingy’s next album titled Chingology was released later that year.

2013-2014: «King Judah» et «Watch The World»

In the spring of 2013, Chingy announced that he claimed the belief of the Black Hebrew Israelites and released the music video for “King Judah”. It was his attempt to follow a moral agenda and denounce mainstream rap. Major Australian and New Zealand media outlets have leaked information about a new Chingy collaboration titled “Watch The World” featuring New Zealand-based Asian model/singer Lucy X (Lucy Xu).

The track produced by Christopher Kris (Kris Lal) was rumored to feature on an upcoming compilation album which was released in 2014. On November 1, 2013, the single was released to iTunes and radio. The song reached number two on the iTunes Urban chart in both countries, with a video as well.

2017: Sign to Bungalo Records

He signed with the Universal Music Group distributed label Bungalo Records and made it his third recording under the Universal umbrella. Chingy will participate in the “Millennium Tour” with B2K in 2019.
