In 2002, she auditioned for the reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals, which aimed to create a boy band and a girl band to compete for the number one Christmas spot on the UK Singles Chart. She sang “Have You Ever” during her audition and was one of twenty contestants (ten girls and ten boys) chosen as finalists by judges Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri Halliwell.

GIRLS ALOUD

On November 30, 2002, she was the first contestant to qualify for the girl group, joining Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh to form Girls Aloud, after the final public vote.

The band’s debut single ‘Sound of the Underground’ peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 2002 Christmas number one on the One True Voice boy band ‘Sacred Trust/After You’re Gone’. Girls Aloud held the record for the shortest time between forming as a group and achieving a number one single.

In May 2003, ‘Girls Aloud’ released their debut album Sound of the Underground which entered the charts at number two and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) later the same year. In 2009, “Girls Aloud” took a break from pursuing solo projects.

CHERYL COLE SOLO CAREER

In April 2009 she began working on solo material and her debut album, 3 Words, was released in the UK on October 26. The album spent two weeks at number one.

X FACTOR CHERYL COLE

In 2008, she replaced Sharon Osbourne as a judge for the fifth series of The X Factor alongside creator Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh. She received the girls category (made up of solo women ages 16-25) and was later deemed the winner when Alexandra Burke crowned the winner of the fifth round on December 13.

In 2009, she returned for the sixth series and was assigned the boys category (consisting of solo men aged 16–25). She was the winning judge for a second consecutive year when Joe McElderry won on December 13.

In 2011, Cheryl joined Cowell, LA Reid and Paula Abdul on the judging panel for the American version of The X Factor. After a three-week stint, she left the show. Cowell said the reason she left was that he had offered her a place on the UK version’s 2011 series and felt she would have been more comfortable there.

In December 2012, Cheryl sued the US producers of The X Factor for $2.3m (£1.4m). She was awarded $1.8m (£1.1m) for the first season, then sued for $2m (£1.25m) for the second season, plus damages -additional interest. In November 2013, Cheryl won for her settlement, for an undisclosed amount between her and producers Blue Orbit.

In 2014, she returned as a judge on the UK version of The X Factor for its eleventh series, signing a £1.5million contract. She was selected to mentor the girls category and she cast Chloe Jasmine, Stephanie Nala, Lauren Platt and Lola Saunders for the live shows. Nala and Jasmine were eliminated in Week 2 and Saunders in Week 4, while Platt finished fourth. In 2015, Cheryl returned to The X Factor for its twelfth series. She was selected to mentor the group category for the first time and chose 4th Impact, Alien Uncovered and Reggie ‘n’ Bollie for the live shows.
